Pellets Pellet Storage Solutions

If you're near a Walmart, they have PitBoss Pellets...at least the two Walmarts near me!!! I pre-sifted & mixed my pellets with a 1/4" screened bucket I made...wasn't too much sawdust and bits... I was fairly impressed!😁👍🏻
I picked up 6 bags of Pit Boss pellets at$8.88 each at Wally World.

120lbs of Pitboss delivered to my door for free... I paid $1 more per bag than you did Timmy

My nearest TS is a good hike of 30+miles maybe... but that's worth it for my FAV Bear Mountain

Nearest TS to me is 40+ miles.......but its in the town i work in. 😁

Just purchased my first Traeger. Got the Timberline 850. They say not to keep pellets in the hopper as they will get moisture built up and effect the auger. do you all empty out the hopper every time you use it? also, when i open the little trap door on the back to let pellets out only so much comes out then the rest just stay in the hopper and I can't push the rest out because of the guard that is there! ugh. any help and or suggestions would be great!

Search around the site, this has been discussed more times than I can count.

Yes, I empty pellets after each cook. Easy insurance to prevent auger jams, low temps, ignition issues. I store them in 5 gallon buckets with weather tight, screw-on lid. Buckets stay in my garage.

Many people remove the guard in the hopper so that they can clean the pellets out. I just loosened the screws slightly so that I can still have the guard in there JIC but it comes out fairly easily.

ok thank you. so do you empty the hopper while its still in shut down mode? or after that has taken place (which seems to take awhile I've noticed)

I never have the hopper empty, but I don't live in a high humidity area.

I removed the guard long ago.

Buy a magnet pellet chute extender for the pellet door to ease pellet flavor swapping.

thanks! In your profile picture i see you added a wood shelf in front. did you make this and just put on top of the existing metal shelf?

After shut down (15-25 min depending on what your cook temperature was). Don't stick your hand in the hopper while the grill is on or in shutdown mode, the auger could be spinning.

I removed the stock shelf and made a new base and shelf that bolts on with the stock holes. I have made many mods to my 850, all documented here. Shelves, insulation, pellet storage and chute, Fireboard, cold smoke generator, pellet stir motor, heat baffles, drip channel liner. Lots of fun "covid projects".

I'd love to see your setup or tips on what works best for storing your wood pellets. Currently have a large tub/lid with my Traeger bags laying in them, roughly 5 different woods. I've heard of getting 5 gallon buckets and labeling them but that seems like a lot of space to take up on the porch. Struggling with making this look organized and easy to use without being cluttered or look like I'm doomsday prepping. Thanks!
I bought 4 of these and really like them. I also bought a 3D printed funnel for the hopper to more quickly change out the pellets and these containers slide right in place and collect them all with minimal spillage.
