Pellets Pellet Dust Test ► Results Are In

I’ve been sifting Traeger Pellets over a 5 gallon bucket for almost a year. The bucket is over half full of dust from the Traeger pellets. Thought I’d keep them for my cold smoker tubes. Will try PB brand next time.

FWIW, I've had the best luck with Bear Mountain. Uniform size pellets, dense, low dust and good (correct) flavor.

wish you would have included camp chef pellets too.

i have ben using traeger pellets only since i got my 575. these findings are interesting. when it comes to performing in a cook how do the pitboss ones compare?

Wish you would have sent me a bag

Camp Chef come in clear bags... you can pretty much see for yourself right?

Thanks for taking the time for testing. There is another factor that may also impact the amount of dust - how the bags were shipped and stored by the retailer. To some extent, the amount of dust will be impacted depending on how the bags were thrown around by the shipper and by the retailer. I use all three brands and my last bag of Pit Boss had an extraordinary amount of dust in it. On average, I have observed that Bear Mountain has the least amount of dust and Pit Boss/Traeger about the same (depending on specific bags). I now primarily use Bear Mountain when I can get them on sale and Pit Boss when I can't (best price). Previously I used Traeger pellets only for about 8 years without problems. The price differential was too much to ignore the alternatives.

I've been using Lumber Jack Pellets recently. Not as much dust as the Traeger pellets, but still more than I thought I would see.

Your point is valid...
And I knew this would come up, So I made mental note as a reply to this:

My bag of Taeger was bought off the shelf, placed in my back seat, placed in a dry area of my house and sat till I tested...
My PitBoss was shipped by Lowes to me and the boxes were obviously thrown around and stacked on each other on my porch, I barely got the boxes in the house and the bags were falling out the bottom of them... ABUSED??? YEAH, but you see the results.
My Bear Mountain, almost the same story as the PitBoss, shipped and boxes were dented, YET I was able to prove that 2 bags of Bear Mountain left the same amount (which was the least) if you also see my post HERE.
Maybe you also missed my comment that the Traeger pellets were actually falling apart and creating dust as I was shaking them, the others did not, clearly (TO ME) Traeger pellets are a weaker construction.

This was ALSO the 3rd time I've done the Traeger Pellet test for myself... I've still got buckets with Traeger Pellets in them and have sifted a whole bucket before this 'official' test, and every time I saw way too much dust. Which is what lead me to do the test in the first place!!! Basically, I have never sifted any Traeger pellet that didn't give me more dust and breakup than I prefer to see in any product that expensive. That is my personal conclusion.

Does dust not burn if it makes it down the auger tube?

Wish I would have known, I have several.

Yes clear, but hard to judge without sifting & mine were shipped here

I tried ‘B&B oak‘ pellets from Home Depot @12.99 for 20 lbs. very little powder, but significant broken pellets.
‘they also burned fairly quickly relative to Traeger pellets...
