Gasket seal

Soooo... it's been a minute. Any update on getting your lid to seal better on your Pro 575?
To be honest I haven’t paid it much attention - but yes it does still leak a bit. It is better than pre-gasket but the lid could do with so tweaking. We had a baby in the summer so I haven’t gotten round to it…

OK cool, good to know (and congrats on the baby)! I just ordered a roll of the Lavalock to install on my Pro 780 (which I used for the first time on New Years Eve). Got quite a bit of smoke leaking from under the lid when I first fired it up, and I'm hoping to tighten things up. I do have a bit of a gap on my lid as well, so I expect to have similar results as yours. Will look into unscrewing and adjusting the lid if it doesn't seal better.

You can add a little slice of gasket on the door arm hook that catches the lid when it’s open. This makes a soft opening at the top when the arm catches the door (‘the fridge door’ feeling). Also, adding a bit of gasket to underside of the metal flap at the rear of the pellet hopper door does the same, soft opening when the flap catches the lid at the back when open. Both of these things also reduce wear on metal to metal contact points.

This is a great thread, been a while since anyone posted anything so I’m wondering how the gaskets have held up? I’m on a mission to make or break my Pro780 into a smoker!

I added the Lavalock brand gasket to my Pro 780 almost a year ago (make sure your grill is clean and inside at room temp before you apply it, or the gasket won't cure/seal correctly). It's held up excellent where I'm at (and I have harsh snowy winters in the teens/minus 0 and rainy/dry summers in the 90's F). I store my 780 on an exposed patio just under a grill cover. Gasket is still adhering just fine, and I can't imagine using my Pro 780 without it. It reduced the smoke leak 95%, and I also added it to my pellet hopper lid.

I can only speak accolades about the stuff - highly recommended! It's a travesty that Traeger cheaped out and didn't include it at the factory. IMHO it's a design flaw that should absolutely be on it right off the manufacturing line.

I installed the Lavalock last a year ago and it's working fine. The hard part is making sure the surfaces are absolutely grease free. I used Traeger Grill Cleaner and rubbing alcohol. Don't stress out over the white or gray type. I bought the white and I get no smoke leaks. The white will turn gray after a few cooks anyway.

Mines been on over a year on my 780, it not peeling off and still seals good.

Thank you all for your input as well as advice. At first I was planning to use the gasket I bought for my green egg but I ordered the Lavalock this morning. I have more racks of ribs on my 780 now, I sat a concrete block against a 2x4 resting on my shelf to help keep the door tighter. Works better than nothing and Im looking forward to putting the gasket on next weekend and giving it a try. I’m definitely going to move the Traeger to my storage room (heated) let it get to room temperature then clean it good with automotive wax and grease remover. Thanks

Shedd, if you look at my avatar photo you will see it is the Pro 575 with something on the lid. That is a 10 pound dumbbell! Even with the Lavalock there was some leakage. That dumbbell balances perfectly on the handle and completely eliminated all smoke leaks.

I would recommend using a food safe cleaner on the inside or your grill. Automotive cleaner could leave a residue and be toxic and leave foul taste on your food. I use the traeger cleaner , it kinda spendy but works really good. Others on here have used other food safe cleaners also.

That would definitely be better than a concrete block, Lol.
I was thinking today that I might look for some latches to add on it because even with a gasket the lid isn’t heavy like my egg so I figured it would still leak.
I have to admit that the ribs I did today was awesome, good smoke, very moist and really easy as I was also tending to two butts on my egg. Everyone loved the ribs and praised my 780 so hopefully I’m on the right path to liking it. I really appreciate everyone’s feedback and knowledge!

I put my gasket on the body, felt facing up towards the lid. Everyone else seems to be putting it on the lid. Am I an idiot?
