Firmware update 2.01.00 is coming

Thanks rkr

Wow, this is a more detailed suggestion than I received from Traeger! Many thanks for the detailed procedure. I am in the middle of a cook now but I will try this tomorrow and see what happens. I will keep you posted.
Cheers

Well, I was able to connect for about 15 seconds and then it disconnected. The 850 will not forget the original router. I hope the firmware push Monday works or I will be contacting Traeger yet again. Thanks again for your help.

Is there a firmware coming this Monday? Is it for all types or just Timerline?

The "updated" Firmware PUSH has been promised every week since the beginning of June ... :( ...

If you cannot connect, you won't be able to download/install the updated Firmware (its a Catch-22) ... unless there is something else going on that they can suppress certain behaviors when the WiFIRE Controller makes initial contact with the Traeger Cloud back-end ...

I added some EDITs after the initial post - when you ran through the steps, did it include those additional steps?

I did follow the steps outlined above and as noted was able to connect briefly. I assume that the drop came after my 850 told their cloud that this grill is already connected. So currently , they can’t “talk to the Traegers” unless they are connected. I am assuming they will do something in the cloud to allow a grill to connect even if that grill has a second instance so that the original configuration can be eliminated.....but pure speculation on my part. Guess we will see Monday, or the next Monday or the next Monday.

I know right! I spoke to them yesterday and the tech guy was like “Wait a min. We pushed the new release on Tuesday both the app and firmware. Your grill was not updated?? Leave it on and it should update in next 24 hrs”. I was like dude can you check again. He puts me on hold and after 5 mins he says “oh apparently ‘IT’ guys found more bugs and couldn’t push but it should come soon, leave your grill on standby”. ?

Nice ... so they're admitting 02.01.03 has more "bonus BUG features" ... sigh ... so 02.01.04 (or later) will be the eventually release ...

Sorry, but there should be a feature to TURN OFF updates if you want. They updated my Ironwood 885 to 02.01.03 and now it beeps every few minutes with a "Grill Con Lost" error.

They really need to have a radio button for updates. I don't want my grill updated unless I know they have a stable release.
Unless they start paying me to be a beta tester I am not interested in updates. Especially if they are not giving me a feature I want or correcting an issue I am experiencing
They can force hold outs along the way by not providing back end cloud services beyond a certain release value. So you must update at some point to use to ensure compatability with the app

Turning off updates from their perspective is disconnecting WiFIRE from your Home Wi-Fi Network ...

I agree that they need to move to a PULL update mechanism ASAP so you as the user are 100% in control of if/when the update occurs, and like RustyJake says above, if there is a cut-off point where a minimum Firmware | Config Version is needed to maintain connectivity to the Traeger Cloud back-end, then they can enforce that requirement when/if needed via "warnings" through the App ...

Their desire for analytics to help drive the next product release cycle is getting in the way of providing a stable platform for their current customers ... until their DEV/QC/QA/Release processes mature GREATLY, I have to agree we are all alpha/beta guinea pigs in the interim ...

Ok ... I have Carne Picada Queso going on the Traeger at the moment and when I am in the screen that shows Temp/Probe/Timer it is constantly flashing "Connecting to your grill" every few seconds ... then back-and-forth endlessly ... this is definitely the Traeger Cloud back-end causing this issue ... one of the many challenges of IoT-devices is when you're reliant on the Cloud back-end for all communications, you are at their mercy for things to work as expected ... this is Annoying-as-F**k (AaF) ...

Hoping I don't have the same issues as you tonight. Putting on a 12 LB trimmed brisket and a 10 LB pork butt before bed tonight
I don't need phone alarms going off all night

It eventually stopped the back-and-forth ... I am happy to say that iOS App 2.0.10b2 finally resolved the audio notification issues and when the Timer goes off in the App, I get beeping :) ... so they fixed something !!!

That's good to hear that there is some movement. My new controller consistently goes from strong connection (-25db) to poor (-70db) about 10 min after power up. I get grill disconnect errors randomly all the time. My grill WiFi AP is about 6ft away so no excuses for poor signal. Support was to call me back within 24 hours about replacement, they missed that commitment. Hopefully they will get their act together at some point.
