Failed to download certificate files

Mine did the same thing, I had to forget the network and reconnect to the network as per the email instructions for it to prompt the update.
As per what email instructions? The original one they sent on the 15th about the update? And did it work after that? When I try it, it downloads the update and then gives me the provisioning error.

Did it work? Or did you get the failed to download certificate error?
After a week or so of trial and error I got my pro 575 to work and these are my steps
1. Reset grill by doing the about grill and ignite combo.
2. Reconnected the grill to WiFi. (Will not pair to phone)
3. Turn off grill after WiFi connects.
4. Unplug traeger and let sit for around 5-10 minutes.
5. Turn back on grill, but do not wake the screen.
6. Let sit for around 24 hours and the grill should have updated to 2.0 without any interruption.
7. Go into WiFi settings and forget WiFi.
8. After WiFi has been forgotten, go through normal pairing process through your traeger app.

Hopefully this works for you guys, I’ve tried everything that traeger has sent out so I’m assuming that keeping the grill on but not waking the screen might be the key? Best of luck everyone!

Anyone had this error when trying to repair their Traeger after update? My grill says version 2 but I can’t seem to get it to talk to my iPhone. When I forget the grill, delete the app, reset Wi-Fi etc it throws that error above

i am getting the same issues...

I followed traeger instruction several times.

- restarted iPhone and grill - no luck
- deleted traeger app and installed again - no l
- manually entered D2 controller information - no luck
- put WiFi access point 5 feet from grill - no luck
- called customer service and did all the stuff over again, but this time we reset the system with demo mode and tried everything again - no luck
-left grill in standby

CS - ended with the issue would be escalated to IT support and they would be in contact with me, I have not heard nothing and that was yesterday. Sent an email to CS at traeger looking for a status, since I have not heard from them.

My ironwood 885 appear to have the newest firmware and software... i told CS that it appears to be something with the cloud service, because it gets an IP address from my router for a bit then tries to download something for the internet and the it like it disconnects with the cloud not allowing it to complete the connects. But I am just guessing

I have google WiFi and I can see the MAC address for the D2 controller and the IP address that it grabs. Then I see the app and D2 controller saying downloading files and the it stops and that is when it breaks and I gets this error message.

still wait on traeger support for a resolution. Just frustrating!

Yup that email. I had a small hiccup with connecting after but it worked and connects now with some minor glitching.

Just a small update. I'm working with Traeger and have provided them a newer video to explain what some of us are now getting with the factory reset procedure and we eventually get back to the certificate error.

They are going to look this over and we have a time setup for Thursday afternoon to troubleshoot over the phone with their IT director. I'm hoping they have more tricks to try, and hopefully can monitor the communications from my grill on their end (AWS cloud servers).

I'll report back any findings, good or bad.

@escline have you attempted it this way? Last night I left my grill on but with the screen on showing the wifi.
Tonight I have it set this way.
I'll let you guys know if it works.

After several days of working on it.... It is working after following SmokeyJoe instructions on how to factory reset. It still does not connect to the app in the iPhone but it is now connected to my WiFi and it has an IP address tied to the MAC address to the D2 controller. I have now left it in standby mode and according to my readings it should update the firmware again. This time I hope it works.

Here is the steps that I followed.

1. I power on grill, and open Menu -> Settings -> About Grill. Shows v2.0.0, config ver: 06.008.
2. I hold Ignite button until Traeger logo appears.
3. After screen shows it's powered up, I power off. Wait 5-10 second, and power back on. (I've tried the following steps with display both on and off)
4. Open Menu -> Settings -> About, and grill shows version 01.01.06, config ver: 06.008.
5. I open WiFi settings to make sure it's running on it's own AP, and no network to forget.
6. After uninstalling phone app (iPhone 10), I reinstall, sign in, and start WiFire setup again.
7. Phone connects to grill, and sends my WiFi info.
8. Grill connects to my WiFi and maintains connection.
9. Unable to connected it to the wifire app at this time. But D2 controller shows that it is connected to my WiFi and router gives it an ip address and tied that to the controller mac address.

Since it's Thursday before they'll work with me on the phone, I went ahead and tried this version. (Unplugged grill from power after initial WifI setup before powering back on and left in standby mode.)

I'll let it sit for a whole day or so before touching it again, but according to my WiFi packet and Ethernet packet sniffing, it's not doing much in the way of traffic. I've sent Traeger a capture file for dissecting, but it looks like the grill is communicating with their cloud server, but it's only sending and receiving a simple MQTT message every 60 seconds. Messages are encrypted, so I don't know what exactly they contain. There is no firmware download taking place, though, as I expect that would be a lot more data than these messages. I'll let it sit for 24+ hours, though, and give it one more chance.

I’m worried only having it connected to WiFi and not the app isn’t going to trigger the download. From their email, it sounds like being connected to the app is required:
Dear Traeger Customer,

We have important information regarding your WiFIRE connected grill. We have upgraded our WiFIRE platform to support future enhancements and provide a better user experience.

To ensure your grill connects to the new platform, please take the following steps:

  1. If you don’t have the Traeger App installed, download the Traeger App from the iTunes app store or Google Play. If you already have the Traeger App, make sure you have updated to the latest version.
  2. Connect your grill to WiFIRE.

  • If you are already connected your Traeger grill to WiFIRE, then make sure the newest version of the Traeger App is installed on your phone and paired and connected to your grill. Once connected with the latest version of the Traeger App, your grill will automatically receive a software update within 24 hours of being turned on. No further action is needed from you and you will soon enjoy the benefits of being paired to the new cloud system!

  • If you’ve never connected your Traeger grill to WiFIRE, after downloading the latest version of the Traeger App, simply connect to WiFIRE by following these instructions. After that, your grill will automatically update within 24 hours after you turn the power switch to the “On” position.

Please allow 24 hours to your grill to update. Once the 24 hours have passed and if you’d like to make sure your update was completed successfully, turn on your grill and go to Menu > Settings > About Grill. Underneath the grill model, you should see this sequence of numbers: “v02.00.00” if you have a D2 Pro, Ironwood or Timberline Grill. You will see "v03.00.00" if you have a Gen 1 Timberline or a Gen 1 Ironwood 885. If instead you see these numbers: “01.01.06”, then you may need to power your grill off and turn it on again, or disconnect and re-pair your Traeger App with WiFIRE.

Thank you for helping us make this transition as smooth as possible. We’re excited about providing you with a better experience going forward and what we have in store for the future. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 1-800-TRAEGER.

Thank you,

Traeger Grills

Interesting little tidbit!

After following the reset procedures I, like the others here, have not been able to get the grill to connect to my app. It is however connected now to my wireless network! I have now let the grill sit for over 24 hours and still no update to firmware yet. Something interesting though, even though the grill is not connected to my app yet, I did get a grill shutdown notification that popped up on my phone after I shut it down into standby. Odd! Very Odd. Something is obviously connected although it does not yet appear to be so on the app. On my app when i click on WiFire it shows the "Connect to Traeger WiFire for the ultimate experience" screen where you would attempt to connect the grill again.

I've noticed that as well. I'm guessing that notifications like this are just broadcast from the grill on whatever network it's attached to. As long as you have the app installed (and running in the background), it'll catch these broadcast messages, and display the notification. It's kind of funny (in a sad way) that we get excited about just getting any kind of notification from our grills on our phone. I know I got excited when I seen that notification. I think I actually even chuckled to myself.

Well, my Ironwood 885 has been plugged in, turned on, and connected to WiFi for just over 24 hours, and no update. :(
