Add a "Smokin-It" Cold Smoke Generator to Timberline 850

So I dug into my machinist stuff and I already have the taps and the 7/16 drill HHS... got those 1/4 fittings above coming... free delivery...
Got my manifold coming... got my 1/8 fittings coming...; got the tube and fire tube already... I also already had the insulation

I'm all fixed up to have this thing TRICKED out by Christmas ... if not completed then I'll use it anyway.

Hey Guys,
Any updates lately? What is the verdict? Good, bad , little of both?

I love mine... if you buy one and do the conversion with the nipples and tubes I have a bunch of stuff left over I can send ya...
This goes for anyone that bought one and is converting... (first come first get)

I save it for LONG smokes and use my pellet tube for almost all others

Hey Slimpicker,
I have not done any molding on mine except what little I added to this post earlier. Did you do exactly like RemE did?
I guess I may need to buys some more stuff.

YES ... do you own one?? lemme take an inventory today of what I have and I'll shoot you a PM

Hi Slimpicker,
Yes I purchased one right after I read this post between you and RemE a few months ago. My only issue is where I had to mount mine (see pics in this thread under my user), one of my lower holes is blocked by my pellet box. Originally I was hoping that would not be a problem. I recently pulled mine off and plugged the hole with a Treager meat prob grommet while you and RemE tried some things. I guess I could always add it to the cold smoker attachment but that adds 3 more holes in my smoker and is no really adding any benefit to the hot side.

AHHHH YES, Sorry Smudge... (just a busy brain) I didn't really see a problem with where you put yours, but it depends on if you can put that nipple on the hole next to your pellet tank. I didn't use the 90 degree angle pieces RemE did but you might have to in order to feed air in the one side... NO I would not drill more holes and move your existing one... and if you can't make this MOD work then so be it IMO.
I did the MOD thinking I'd use it every cook, well, now I use a $20 smoke tube for short cooks and the Bella for long ones... so if you don't get to use the MOD, I'd say you're not missing that much... use the EXTENDED tube idea and your BLOW BACK won't be as bad.

Agreed, long smokes, and specifically Cold Smoking with the grill off is where this shines.

For general "adding more smoke", to a hotter cook over 225F, a cheap smoke tube is the way to go.

This is nice to know. Im glad you guys did this. You guys did a great job doing this mod. Im impressed, I was considering buying one but really didn't want it permanently mounted to the Traeger. I think I'll just pick up a smoke tube and use it. Besides most of my cooks start at low temp and the 780 seems to give decent smoke in the low temp ranges.

And there you have it!!! You see guys,(meaning new guys) there is no "Only One Traeger Way" of doing anything with food. There is however, "what works for you" and "what you like your meat to be".

Now, as soon as RemE cold smokes a Salmon and shows me the results, I'm firing that bad boy up. I'm doin some Cheese soon too.

👏👏👏

RemE or Slimpicker....I have another question. I have some 1” stainless steel pipe laying around but the inside diameter is a little bigger than yours (1.0” OD x 0.050” thick wall x 0.90” ID).
1. Does the inside diameter matter?

2. Does your pipe extension cover the 2 holes in the middle of the existing pipe on the Bella?

3. If the extended pipe is that lose and you added say another 16” to get past the fire pot to reduce to blow back, do you support it?

thanks again and look forward to hearing from either of you.

I say don't do that... that causes all kinds of problems for me... felt like the bella was choking when those hole were covered.

and i didn't need to support mine, just slip it over the bella pipe a little but no far enough to cover those holes and let it lay... I'll see if I have a pic somewhere

1. The tighter the better but not critical.
2. Yes, those 2 holes are there to insert something like a screwdriver to get leverage to twist and remove the pipe if needed to clean etc. Sorry to disagree with Slim but there is no magic to those holes, unless maybe you plugged the end.
3. No, I didn't feel like it needed support.

OK RemE or Slimpicker,
I’m getting ready to do my lid this weekend. So....
1. RemE..... did you use the cellophane when you made your gasket so it would push up along the sides to try and get the best seal possible? Any lessons learned?
2. Did the cellophane pull off easy after it was dry?
3. I see you used high temp stove cement, was there a reason?
4. I’m wanting to use high temp RTV silicone but not sure how hot that top gets. The RVT I have goes to 700 degrees intermittently but I see yours goes to 2000 degrees.
Any more advice from you guys is more than welcomed!!!!!
Thanks guys!
