Thermapen One

The new model may be faster with a better back light however are the updated specs needed for the application that we use it for.. My thought is that the MK4 works just fine, but if you had not made your purchase while it was in production then you will need a MK5….

you guys that are so quick to cast the trusty Mk4 to the side are making me wonder if it's not as good as advertised

Yeah, because the extra 1 second longer it takes the IV to read is going to ruin your cooks. I'd look at it like you got a damn good deal on a proven product that does the job it was designed to do.

Well, I supposed technically you would be able to close the grill lid 1 second faster, saving heat and thus getting your meal to the table quicker. If you check temp 4 times during the cook, you will have cut about 4 seconds off your 10 hour cook.

:D

(I also use the MK4 for brewing and I want to control my mash temperatures pretty tightly so I may consider buying one and using that as an excuse but even then, the MK4 has been the standard in the brewing community for years, as well)

Wasn't at all being serious.

Decisions, decisions. I don't have an Mk4 yet.

Get the one on clearance. Use it a while, then upgrade. The new one isn't going anywhere unless it's a complete dud and I can't see that happening with ThermoWorks. Then you'll have two = win-win.

I'm starting to think I should buy another for a back up before they re-introduce them as the "New Thermapen Classic" @ $129.00 LOL

I think I will go your route and save money.

Exactly.

I did too. It actually just came in today! I'm just excited to not be using $12 ones from Amazon anymore.
Nice, congrats you won’t be sorry.

I’m gonna stick with my MK4 until they start having sales on the new model.

How many people on here are going to get a new thermapen just because it’s newer? I might be guilty but I’m trying to talk myself out of it since it seems so similar to the mk4 with minor fine tuning.
I’m guilty, just ordered. I like the one second response. I know it’s not much difference but when my hand is in the heat, it matters.

Here is my take on the one second read time. I actually think it is a major improvement, if you use it like Thermoworks suggests. But if you just jab it in the meat in a few spots and wait for a reading then no, the 1 second read time is not really very helpful.
I can see where the one second read time will make locating the thermal center much faster.
