Offset smoker repair and new firebox. Then modify to reverse flow. ( Successful)

They have the Rutland 1000f kit with glue at Ace hardware in stock near me, might be the way to go. It's $10.00. Even if it burns up, it might be worth a try.

so supposedly the first time you fire that up the glue hardens to a rock and holds from there on...

That would be awesome, thats what I'm lookin for!

I found this at my local Lowes. Gonna put it around the cooking chamber on the offset. I think the firebox gap is to big for this to fill, so im gonna get the Rutland rope gasket and glue kit at Ace. The Lavalock came in for the Traeger, so im hoping i can wheel the offset in and let it thaw out. And this weekend and get everything installed.

i didnt feel like wrestling the smoker into the garage in the freakin cold, it was 15f Saturday morning. Now they are talking snow again this coming weekend. Gonna play it by ear and see what the weather does. Warm weather can't get here fast enough!

Well, I had some time today. And IT WORKS!!

I got a couple more mods to do,
1.add 8inches to extend the chimney
2. Make the air intake BIGGER
3. Possible make a bigger firebox, this may be optional.

I bought chunk charcoal that helped ALOT.
And did some experimenting with a temporary chimney extension upward. I took the internal extension that went to the grate off.
Got it up to 230f which was 10f higher then in Jan.. Still wouldn’t go higher. So I added more coal, still no change. So I opened the firebox drawer pan and BOOM the temp skyrocketed!
Got it up to 342f before it started dropping.

WAIT... your firebox does NOT have an adjustable intake??? You need an INTAKE that you adjust as much as your stack needs a choke, TEMP control is a combo of intake and choke.

I could get my smoker like yours up to 400 even when I didn't want it to be.

I’m assuming the reverse flow needs a TON more air.

YES that is 'borderline' indeed... you should ADD another one off to one side.
