Fireboard 2

Thanks everyone. I like your suggestion about substituting the competition probes, Timmy. I may get another ambient probe for measuring both sides of my 885. Do you put the ambient probes on the grill itself (using the clips)? I believe I have also seen pictures of the ambient probes mounted on the sides of the smoker also.
The comp probes are perfect for Traeger's, easy to pass thru the side hole. For the minimal price difference I don't know why they bother with stocking both type probes. The needle thin shape is so useful.

Yes, if the go back through this thread you can see how we mounted our pit probes.

I have found that the Traeger thermocouple based temp probe has far faster response time than the Fireboard RTD probe. The Traeger is almost real-time and the Fireboard seems to have a several second lag time in reporting grill temps.

Also, I just got a new Controller Warr replacement for a WI-FI dropout issue. The new controller had been backordered for months, arrived with current firmware. It works perfectly and surprisingly is very close to the Fireboard now, approx 5-8F below what Fireboard shows in the low temp range, and pretty equal above 250F.

Bottom line, I cook by the Fireboard reported temps

One trick I have started using when I noticed the left side of my 780 was warmer then the right side was to put a small pan with warm water in on the right side while heating up the grill. Leave it there for the full cook. Will create moisture and even out the grill temps. Hope it helps.

This was RemE's idea, i found out the hard way.

Ya, me too. I found out about the comp probes when I called Fireboard and asked if they would consider making a needle type probe. They introduced me to the comp probes. I've suggested people ask Fireboard to substitute comp probes when ordering because they are so friendly and helpful.

I consider the Fireboard a fine tool for really making consistent and repeatability great food. Still very surprised that they aren't standard. They are like a hidden secret, odd.

Thats right, i remember now.

They are the bomb!!

Doesn't sound like Fireboard will switch probes any longer. I was going to order but asked if I could substitute probes, either with the kits or with the main unit. Nope!

That's really disappointing! Their std probes with their big inline bulge are not great with the Traeger's small side holes. And passing the connector end isn't optimal either. I think I will contact them and make a case for them to offer the option.

It sounds like these are already packaged (probe kits) to they are just picking from a shelf.

I was looking at the specs on their probes, and the comp. short probes are 1”, regular comp. probes are 3”. The probes that come with the kit are 5”, and while they would be a bit difficult to use on a Traeger, the longer probes might come in handy at times (think large 25 lb. butt, maybe 10” thick).
I’m gonna order the kit as is, and also order the comp. pack.

I ended up with the kit, two comps short, an extra ambient (and clip) and mag base. I’ll see how the regular probes work and likely order a few comps longs once I get over spending this much!

I think the shorts are gonna be really handy. Perfect for fish, chicken pieces, steaks, etc. As thin as they are, might even work for spare ribs also.

I use the shorts for just that, ribs and fish, steaks, work perfect.

I use the longs in whole chicken, briskets etc.

I think i got 11 probes now, 1 rtd, 2 ambient, 2comp. short probes,6 regular probes. I ought to be set for a while. OR maybe i should get another Fireboard! 😁
