Fireboard 2

I just wanted to add to the thread: I received my FB2 today and smoked a small brisket to test it. I am very pleased! Well built, easy setup. It puts the Traeger probes to shame. I had been looking at FireBoard for a while, but based on this thread, in the comments section of the order form I requested to swap the 2 standard probes for 3” competition probes. No questions asked, they sent them. I’m impressed with the company. Ordered Monday, smoking on Wednesday! Even the handwritten smiley face at the the bottom of the packing slip makes a difference. I wish more companies operated like this.

Yup, I love the Fireboard more every time I cook. The comp needle probes are the bomb, not only because they can probe in small spaces like between ribs, but because that are easy to pass thru the side port on a hot grill!

While the Meater probes, well, the app in particular seem cool, my engineer head can't get behind having electronics and batteries in the fire pit. Not to mention sticking a literal spike into the food. The fireboard has excellent WiFi performance, super alarming capability, long battery life, and replaceable and reasonably cheap probes.

Got the fireboard all set up for todays cook. We'll see how it all plays out. So far it kinda neat!!!
The grates look dirty and the Traeger probe looks like it could do with a clean (which is essential) or is just the image that is giving me that effect? I only mention it because you should clean their probe after each cook or you get inaccurate readings.

The Traeger food probe isnt in the picture (unless i missed it :) ) and yes the grates are dirty. And i clean the rtd with a dab of Traeger cleaner on a paper towel. I am gonna use the Fireboard for grill temps and food temps. The OEM Traeger food probe is now clean and in a plastic bag.

I was pleased to see that Fireboard has added trending to their Apple Watch App.
I'm happy to see them actively supporting the products.

You might consider the competition probes instead, they are thin needle like probes with no bulky bump, easy to pass thru the side hole with hot grill.
RemE you are right these probes are da bomb!!!!

Not doing enough investigation up front, I purchased a MEATER probe. After reading all of the discussions on the FireBoard, I’m thinking I might have made a mistake.

I don't think so. All of these tools have a purpose. The MEATER probes are great as well. Features and benefits for each differ. MEATER is great for monitoring your food temperature and giving you a predictable time frame for completion of the cook. You can also wrap your proteins without having to remove the probes and reinsert and you don't have to deal with cords.
I don't have a MEATER probe, but I assume you could use a grill clip and have one in the pit to monitor the temp of that (as long as you were staying within the temperature limits for the probe).
Enjoy what you purchased and make it work for yourself. There are quite a few on the forum using the MEATER probes

I just ordered another probe today and the MAG base... They're so cheap really why not...
I ordered another comp probe and bowl clip and an rtd probe. I got the base last Monday, that thing is a game changer! Lol

I've been researching the Fireboard here and on YouTube, and definitely like what I am seeing. I have what is probably a dumb question, so go easy on me since I've only been smoking for about a year now, and my IW 885 is my first and only smoker :).

I cannot for the life of me figure out how I would use (or why I would need) the Fireboard Drive, as opposed to just the Fireboard. I don't believe there is a place for a fan on the 885...plus the 885 has its own temperature controller.

I can see why Kamado or BGE owners would benefit from the Drive, since those grills don't control their own temps, and there is a place for a fan.

Am I missing something?

Since your Ironwood 885 has already has a fan to move and control air flow, I see no reason to purchase a Fireboard Drive (unless you also have an Egg or Kamado Charcoal grill). I am satisfied with the FireBoard2 and 6 temperature monitoring ports.

You wouldn't. The folks here that bought the drive version use it for other grills like the Egg.

All newer Fireboard2 have drive capability, if you buy one dont get the one with the fan. Just get the standard unit with probes. LATER if NEEDED you can purchace the fan. Say for a egg smoker or even an offset smoker if you feel the need.

I purchased the $189 one. If you call they will substitute probes. The competition short probes are awesome!

Thanks everyone. I like your suggestion about substituting the competition probes, Timmy. I may get another ambient probe for measuring both sides of my 885. Do you put the ambient probes on the grill itself (using the clips)? I believe I have also seen pictures of the ambient probes mounted on the sides of the smoker also.

I use the clip on the side opposite the hopper, i did this next to the rtd.

i run 2 ambient probes almost all the time in the grill. If its really cold I'll drop an ambient outside the grill.
