Redmond Costco as a Traeger rep was there. Hoping for some "free" stuff, like some bags of pellets, extra drip pans, virtual high five, something.
The returning is more geared around me being a Traeger fanperson and what seemed to be left out to dry with this iteration. Traeger rep could have said something around "There may be an older version of the firmware, run the setup through the app and it will not show up, but wait a few hours for the firmware to update, then go through the setup again".
w.r.t. the "current" firmware version, the Wifire status page clearly shows a newer version is out.
I have some cooking going on this weekend, so I'll give it to Monday to be at least as good as the Lil'Tex it is replacing.
My sense when interacting with the Traeger Reps @Costco in Redmond and/or Woodinville prior to "lockdown" has been that they may not be Traeger FTEs, but an external partner of some kind ...
"w.r.t. the "current" firmware version, the Wifire status page clearly shows a newer version is out."
Yes it does show that information ... relying on Traeger's documentation being accurate, detailed, or up-to-date on their website is the issue - if you choose to continue to own a Traeger with a WiFIRE Controller, you will soon learn that they have a long ways to go in maintaining the information they post via their website ... it hasn't been fully accurate, documented in full, or up-to-date this entire CY ... I have been tracking it regularly/daily since Mid-Feb ... I have called into Traeger Support and spoken with Supervisor's on a couple occasions to verify/validate the information below ... YMMV ...
Call Traeger Support - ask to speak to a Supervisor (
because if you end up with an Outsource Partner representative, those calls generally do not provide useful/actionable/accurate information), and inquire about the issues with the May Update release - version 02.01.02 (released on May 18th) ... a
subset of WiFIRE Controllers that installed the update would unexpectedly shutoff (the impacted controllers were susceptible to Firmware corruption) ... power cycle the grill ... unexpectedly shutoff ... this created havoc for those impacted grill owners trying to use their Traeger over the Memorial Day Weekend (the workaround was to disconnect the WiFIRE Controller from being connected to a Wi-Fi Network) ... those impacted grill owners could still operate their grill manually via dial & display in the interim once they got the controller disconnected ...
NONE of the above fallout from the May Update release was documented via the Traeger website in "real time" ... a brief write-up was posted at the top of the WiFIRE Troubleshooting Page (
https://www.traegergrills.com/support/wifire-troubleshooting) about a week or so afterwards, but it seemed to be directed at dealers, and not at an end user / owner ... there was a link to a Google Docs spreadsheet, where they asked that you document specific information about an impacted unit (Grill UUID value, etc.), that link was "broken" and you would end up back on the same WiFIRE Troubleshooting Page ... a couple weeks after this information was posted ... it was removed ... the removal seems to have coincided with a programmatic fix being rolled out via the Traeger Cloud back-end, and the unexpected shutdown issues plaguing the subset of WiFIRE Controllers susceptible to Firmware corruption appears to have stopped (i.e. they have reconnected their existing WiFIRE Controller to their Home Wi-Fi Network without any further shutdown issues) ...
Why the WiFIRE Status Page does not list the current "shipping" version as 02.00.01 is an unknown (back to the issue of not providing accurate/detailed/transparent information), but you are not alone in that being the version that presently gets installed ... no one setting up a "new" grill / WiFIRE Controller has received a Firmware Update beyond 02.00.01 since May 27th (unless it shipped with a newer version from the factory) ... numerous people have called into Traeger Support only to be given promises of the next update coming by the end of the week ... this has been going on for 5 weeks ... I keep pointing to Traeger's history of update releases being every 60 days ... and they seem to be sticking to that cadence ...
A quick review of the WiFIRE Status Page shows the regular cadence for update releases being approximately every 60 days ... that has held true since November 2019 ... this includes previous releases that broke functionality for a subset of users (January 2020 caused issues just before the Super Bowl - WiFIRE would no longer be connected to Wi-Fi, and no amount of troubleshooting would correct the issue, thus it required those impacted owners being sent out a replacement controller) ...
Recapping the 2020 WiFIRE Controller Firmware release history:
- January 2020 Update release - 02.00.00 - RELEASED 1/15/20- prior to Super Bowl
- Issues with the update breaking a working WiFIRE setup for a small subset of owners as outlined above - resolution for those who could not successfully reconnect their WiFIRE Controller was to get a replacement controller sent out by Traeger with Firmware version 02.00.01, which resolved the issue (02.00.01 seems to be the most "stable" firmware release so far this CY) ...
- March 2020 Update release - 02.01.00 - RELEASED 3/24/20
- New functionality was added within the Config Version file to allow grills to select 500 degrees, but this update seemed to be targeted release versus a wide release, thus it created a lot of angst for those grill owners who's Grill UUID value was not part of the the targeted list to receive the Config Version file update - this would be rectified when the Config Version updates to all grills would "go live" in the May 2020 release
- May 2020 release - 02.01.02 - RELEASED 5/18/20 - prior to Father's Day Weekend
- Issues with WiFIRE Controller unexpectedly shutting off for a small subset of owners as outlined above - resolution was a temporary workaround disconnecting WiFIRE from the Home Wi-Fi Network ... some users called into Traeger Support and received a replacement controller with version 02.00.01, while others waited for the "programmatic" fix to be applied to the Traeger Cloud back-end that stopped the unexpected shutdowns of the WiFIRE Controller, thus allowing them to reconnect their controller "as is" back to the Traeger Cloud back-end ...
Very little of the above is documented publicly by Traeger - especially when it comes to "issues" and their potential resolutions ... to be blunt, as an IoT-device technology company, this is not acceptable in any manner ... Traeger has a lot of "growing" up to do when it comes to transparency, accuracy, and the depth of detail they cover within their support pages ...
