What's cooking on your FlatRock or Griddle today? 🥞🥓🍔

Flat Top King posted a comparison video between the Halo and Flatrock, which are the two high end (before you get really high end) griddles on the residential market. I kinda like this guy. He seems pretty straightforward (not as much as Griddling w/Johnny) and honest. Anyway, just posting in case anywhere here is in the market and looking to spend about $1k on a griddle. Personally I think the Halo would stress me out with it’a high temps. I could see liking it if I was a daily cooker on a flat top, but just using it as part of my outdoor cooking arsenal I think I would get stressed. The Traeger however seems to just be steady with better temp control both low and high.

He did call my Weber 28” tiny. There is less of a size difference between it and the Flatrock than there is the Halo and the Flatrock and he seemed to think the later was negligible. Plus you can get the Weber 36” which is larger than each of them for $400 less. Oh well……that’s enough of me defending my purchase / being a Weber fan boy.

Yep, can’t say I’ve ever tasted $400 plus or minus when at the end of the day cooking is cooking. Like the difference to a long way home or a short cut. My friends son has a Webber griddle, had some good smash burgers a couple weeks ago. Nice looking griddle. I think you’re gonna really enjoy it. I can’t imagine not owning a griddle and couldn’t stand it years ago dragging the old electric griddle out of the closet (too big for the cabinets) to cook breakfast then put it back to collect dust until the next time. Now I’m using one a few times a week most of the time.

It’s like everything else. I can spend twice as much on a Lexus as a Toyota when they both drive just fine. I’m very happy with my Weber. Pretty sure I’d like the Flatrock too though. I do not think from what I’ve seen I’d like the Halo. Too much juice under the hood for me.

I just thought I would share something that might interest some of you. I’ve been vac sealing foods for some time now and today I took a bag out of the freezer that had two smash burgers in it dated 44 days ago. My Wife wanted a hot dog and I decided on heating up the smash burgers. I put the bag in a pot of boiling water and turned the heat down to medium low while I ran a couple potatoes through the fry cutter and fried them. You’ll notice how juicy and moist the double smashed burger is. Taste like I just cooked it. I buy meats on sale, cook and freeze for quick and simple meals. I’ve done this many times for the two of us or a whole crowd, it sure takes the stress away trying to cook and get the timing right.

He really likes the Weber too.
He was pretty big on the heat distribution and ability to actual hold a lowish temp with the weber

I am cooking for my wife and I and as we get older, our appetites are not what they once were. Thus, we always end up with leftovers. If I plan on eating leaftovers in a couple of days, they go into the refrigerator. However, sometimes I will cook enough to last for many meals. They get divided into meal-sized portions that are vacuum sealed and then frozen. I have one freezer I keep at minus 20 F. That will easily keep food for a year or more and it can be reheated Sous Vide and end up as good as the day it was cooked. In September, I will load up the freezer with smoked or griddled meat to last through the entire winter.

What kind of freezer do you have that goes down to -20 F? I'm interested in getting one if it is not too expensive.
If you can find the medical ones some go -40. I got a buddy that has one that came from the blood bank and I think it goes to-35.

My freezer is an upright that I got for my attached garage over 20 years ago. I do not know if they even make the model anymore. The main thing to avoid is a frost free freezer. In order to avoid defrosting like in combination refrigerator/freezers, the refrigeration cycle periodically reverses to melt frost. Thus, those freezers rarely get much below 0 F. We have a practice of removing everything from the freezer on July 4th and storing it in coolers while we manually defrost the freezer. Then it is good until the next year.

Serious question here.

It definitely complicates things. Smash burgers without the bread is Keto. I have a niece that’s Vegan, she looks it too! Life is short, very short after 60, but i have been trying to cut back. I quit breakfast other than a banana and a granola bar, nothing for lunch but dinner is really tough. I’ve actually lost 28 lbs over 6 months and dropped 2 waist sizes. I’m trying but I’m also getting older and loosing mass lol.

Studies have shown that the older you get , the harder it is to lose weight. Calories are burned by muscle mass. As people age, few maintain the same level of muscle mass they had when they were younger. Fortunately, appetites also decline. I now eat 3-4 ounce portions of meat while I used to eat 8-10 ounces. You do not have to starve yourself, but it is best to cut back on caloric dense foods. My downfall is ice cream.
