The grate in the pellet hopper?

I'm smarter than the average bear. I know not to put my fingers in a moving piece of machinery.

Yeah. It comes with the grill. It’s a shiny broken stick with a wire attached to it. Not sure what it’s used for, though!
I think it's a weapon of some sorts

I set the pellet grill grate on top of the screws. That way I can get to the bottom of the hopper with the vac… but it keeps the kids fingers out of the hopper…

Great comments everyone. Quick question: when removing pellets, it seems to me quite a few pellets will remain in the hopper on top of the auger. Do you make the effort to remove them all?

Love the Yogi Bear quote!!! With that spirit, I shall quote Dale Berra, Yogi's son. Dale was a Cleveland Indian 2nd baseman. When asked if he was like his dad he said. " NO, Our similarities are different!"

BTW, I have seen the edge of the flat Earth and survived. With that bravado, I removed the grate. Ours is not to question why, ours is to do or DIE!

I vacuum as many as I can get to from both ends (hopper and fire pot). No problems so far but I live in a dry climate. Startup just takes a little longer.

you can always prime the augur to clear out the pellets in there and then just scoop them out of the firebox. I seldom do that, however.

What exactly is the grate in the pellet hopper for? I don't understand what it is there, and it makes it very difficult to stir the pellets in the hopper or removing the pellets when I want to switch pellets. Anybody just removed it? Any reason not to, and if so what was Treager's purpose of the grate?
I would remove it . I removed mine. As far as liability, I own my decision. Wow can’t believe that someone even mentioned losing a finger. Its a hindrance , serves no practical purpose. I do not recommend to remove it if your grilling in a nudist area.

The finger bit is a joke.
