Smoke is subjective and it all comes down to what you think tastes best

Mad Scientist is doing a series of videos on pellets, smoke tubes and grills. Should be some interesting videos in the coming weeks. Next week is supposed to be side by side comparisons between different brands and their smoke profikes

nothing will keep me from using my whiskey barrel chips in my tubes, that's a heavenly smell indeed.

Tried a smoke tube tonight for first time and major fail. Couldn’t keep it lit! Will need to practice tomorrow.
Haha, so true, it took me awhile with this as well. My advice is to use a mapp torch, ( the yellow one ) light it for a minute, let it burn, close the Q lid, then every few minutes keep torching it, so the first 10 min you keep torching it, close the lid repeat, eventually they stay lit and do very well, takes about 4-5 times in my personal experience, it takes practice and some patience. One caveat i noticed makes a difference is that if you pack the tube really tight, like with a metal guide rod etc, it works much better to stay lit, loosely packed tubes do not stay lit as well, just my personal observation...

I stand my tube up, light it with a propane torch and let it burn for at least 5 mins. Then, with leather gloves I lie it on its side in the smoker.

After the tube is n its side, I flame it again with the torch to make sure.

This has worked well for me.

I use the smoke tube almost every cook (except pizzas). Really helps with that classic smoke flavor to simulate my old stick burner.

My lighting method is similar to Dan-H — let it burn a minute or two vertical, like a candle, cover with a foil cap to extinguish the flame, then lay down. While actively burning, keep the tube away from the grill walls so that the paint isn’t damaged.

I've owned my Pro 575 for a month. I did a sirloin tip roast but wasn't happy with the smoke ring. I bought two smoke tubes and today I did a test fire. I am really pleased with the amount of smoke they created. I did this because on Thursday I will smoke an 18 lb Brisket and wasn't sure which smoker I was going to use. I didn't want to screw up a $110.00 USDA Prime Brisket. Last Christmas the same Brisket was about $60.00 It's getting really hard to eat unhealthy. LOL

Smoke tube…Yes!
Same lighting method as Dan H.
I use a no name octagon shaped one (less than $20). Works great, I love the extra smoke flavour.
We probably bought the same tubes. I got mine from Amazon paid $13.97 ea with free shipping. They came with a cleaning brush and a marinade brush.

I got my smoke tube with a bunch of fire starter packets and have found that If I just light one of those, it gets the process off to a great start, but a bit too large of a flame. That said, I’m running out of the fire starters so I tried gelled alcohol. It extinguished pretty darn fast and didn’t burn half the tube.
