I purchased the same as the OEM probe. The connecter fits just as the original did, and the probe is accurate.

You mean that the 3rd party probe is more accurate than the original Traeger probe????
You can also get them on Amazon, so I will try one.
Yaoawe also sells an RTD Thermocouple, but I am not sure if it fits the newer controllers.
THIS! Stick and stay probes are for ballpark measurements. Instant read, quality instant reads are for determining doneness.I use the "trust, but verify" strategy. I use the Traeger/WireFire probe to let me know I'm getting close, but then verify with the Thermoworks Thermo Pen. I also have a Thermoworks Smoke, but honestly haven't pulled it out since using the above method.

Yep, this could be a lengthy discussion. I often wonder if there isn’t some transference of heat down the probe itself as a decent portion of the probe is exposed fully to the heat. It’s just not a reliable finishing determination tool IMO. The procedures you mentioned are ones I generally engage in as well. The instant read probes serve two functions. You can get temperature readings at multiple places in the cook vs one position for the Traeger probes. Furthermore, you get tactile feedback when inserting and removing the probe. That tactile feedback can be just as valuable as the temperature readings.
