Just bought a new 850...question

Thats normal. Most PID controlled smokers do that. All Rec Tec and GMG smokers do that. You want that to happen, more smoke flavor and better temp control, i had a rec tec and when I heard the fan doing that on this grill I was so happy. On and Off cycles are great. And they will happen with or without super smoke under 225, but more consistent with super smoke.
Oh. Interesting. Thanks.

So I received my new T850 yesterday. 1st try... last night Challenge Chicken.. perfect. Today I decided on ribs. During preheat everything seems fine, then once in cook cycle the convection fan cycles on/off every 2 sec.. Called Traeger support, they had me go through a process of removing the control panel, removing the grill under the hopper, cutting the tie wraps and pulling the fan wire out the front, disconnecting the orange wire (fan wires), counting 30 and reconnecting. Supposed resetting of the fan. Made not sense. Did nothing to fix the on/off cycle issue. Called Traeger a second one time, now they recommend replacing the fan (not the control unit). Problem.. I won't have fan until June. Sounds like their is a QC issue with the fans, they're installing g at the factory. Probably a silent replacement of defective manufacturing. Seriously disappointed. $1700 and the third g craps out after one use.

Anyone experience same with the T850?
That sounds like normal operation to me. Once the grill gets to temp and if set at a lower cooking temp or super smoke mode the grill hisses every 2-3 seconds on and off. Sort of sounds like a jet engine turning on and off. It’s just the grill doing it’s thing. Watch some videos on YouTube of other T850s but honestly that sounds normal to me.

Thanks... turns out it was most likely normal, but due to Traeger support mentioning I most likely needed a new fan, and the weak Wifi of the pre2019 models, I actually returned the unit. It has since been replaced by the 2019 T1300. Strong Wifi... improved controller, etc.. happier than a pig in, well you know.. ?

I got the 18 model only to find out 19 was about to be released. Was kind disappointed until this thread. The guys are saying that there are problems with the D2 controllers so I'm good for now and maybe upgrade after they work out the kinks. Good luck on the 19 I'm curious on how it's gonna run coming "out of the gate". Check back in!
I have only used my 2019 Timberline 850 once and double checked the temperature with a dial temp oven thermometer I bought at Walmart a couple of years ago. The controller showed 250 and the oven thermometer was also 250. I will have to see how it does at other temps. The meat probe read within 2 degrees of an older meat probe that I have used for years as my brisket temperature rose.

Gang.

Please remember if you want to check the eveness of the pit do so with an empty pit. If u have meat, trays etc on the grates you will get various readings. It is conventional cooking.....ever check temps in different areas or when it's full vs empty....I do understand why they say they take temps in different areas (3) of the pit to get an average..... Purley for controller average calibration. It comes down to how empty or full the grates are and how that will redirect the heat. It will have an effect. Ambient temps and wind will also have effect. Just wait till winter arrives and minus 25 c plus winds decide to blow. Just my $0.02.
