Exterior Paint Bubbling - Ironwood 650

Honestly, that amount of temperature overshoot seems pretty normal. Given time, the controller should stabilize back to the set temp.
I would expect much higher temp spikes to bubble the paint that bad.

This is from the factory instruction manual ... "There is no temperature control with the “Smoke” setting. This timed cycle setting for “Smoke” is a factory pre-set recommended by Traeger Pellet Grills to develop a “Smoking” temperature of 150 to 180 degrees F. "

So you think a 200 degree over temp is normal ? It was probably way hotter than 380 degrees at the hot pot make the paint melt ... The thermostat probe is way up top ... You must work for Traeger customer support ?

This is statement is direct from the Traeger website: The series touts precise temperature control, the Digital Pro Controller has Advanced Grilling Logic to keep temps within +/-15 degrees F* for guaranteed precision grilling.

What really happened was that on the "smoke" mode the auger never shut off and kept feeding pellets into the hot pot and the fan kept blowing like a blow torch ... This is week 2 with no response from Traeger about the issue .....

Nope I don't work for Traeger, just a retired engineer. Just personal experience after owing two Traeger grills over the last 10 years. They can overshoot 200 degrees at times but usually recover.

If the controller failed and just drove the auger forever, hell yes, it would be quite the blowtorch and your paint damage shows that. Keep after support, I have found them very hit and miss. For me lately mostly miss, promising call backs within 48 hours and never delivering is the current service I'm seeing.

I am expecting my 4th replacement IW650 to ship within the next two weeks. I think they need to adjust the programming on the controller to account for door open events. In all the cases of my paint peeling it was when cooking chicken breast at 500degrees, I would cook it for 10 minutes, open to flip the breasts (usually cooking about 15-18 breasts) it would take a minute or two and the auger would just ramp up to try and maintain 500 degrees while the door was open. If they would just set the controller to continue with the current rate when the temperature drops significantly, and then after a set delay or when a temperature 'bounce' (when the door is shut) is detected then ramp up to get back to temp. You could even have an option in the menu to set a timer that allows for x minutes before the controller ignores what it thinks is a door open event.

Interesting, when I open my Timberline at high Temps, it throttles down if I keep the door open too long. I was pleased as I expected it to go full out to attempt to maintain temp, but it detected the big temp drop from door open. It recovered pretty quickly once closed up again.

Mine doesn't throttle down. I wish it did. I have an IW650.
Both my controllers for my Kamado have a program built in to the algorithm to detect the open lid and won't sent the grill skyrocketing up to try and get to temp. It will wait x amount of time before it attempts to stabilize. On my Fireboard2 drive there is a time adjustment you can make if the set value doesn't work. My CyberQ doesn't have an adjustable time, but has a set time
I know my IW650 will just roar the whole time it's open. I never go past 425°F on it now because of overshooting too much

Wow, I’m amazed you can keep getting a replacement. Do you have pictures of the damage on each? How do you get the claim escalated?

Yes, same problem. Only a few weeks old. Shipped out new grill. Not taking new one above 400F.

The inside of my replacement starting peeling on initial seasoning....

I have a TBL 850. I too have burns in same area. See picture. I had problems with ignition and very high temps get go. Over 500. It took a number of calls and testing to finally get it right as far as high temps and ignition problem. Replace fan, then thermocouple sensor. Slight improvement but not fully fixed. Then they sent a new controller. Ignition problems fixed but still high temps. They then sent ignition rod and fire box. That fixed it. The temp problem was set temp to say 350 temp would go to 480. It would over heat every time. I received the grill end of October. Finally fixed end of July. Still have burn spots. Going to call and demand replacement of at least the barrel or a new grill.

They can’t replace the barrel on the new IW’s and probably not TL’s either.

After all the calls over the last several months they are sending a replacement. Rep also said they will pick up the defective grill. Wonder how long this will take.

Glad it see that Traeger is standing up and handling these issues, at least case by case.

This came up in another thread so I thought I would start a new thread here to see who has had this issue and what (if anything) Traeger has done to rectify it for you.

I had my grill for less than a week and the first time I went to sear on it, the paint bubbled in two spots where the heat shield ends. Sounds like others have had this issue as well, and are noticing bubbling in other spots as well.

I contacted the store that I bought it from and they are dealing with Traeger. So far no response.

Anyone else had this, and if so, any fix from Traeger? Seems like the exterior coating they applied isn't quite durable enough.

I had the same issue on my first 650 it happened to me about 2 weeks after I bought it .
I got a replacement from Treager.
Then the new one started turning dodgy. After some time back and forth this one is getting replaced too.

Having a similar issue after a smoke last night. i took it to 500 F for the first time but only for about an hour. They claim they are going to try and get me a replacement part. a 'backpack replacement'. It is going to be one hell of a future weekend disassembling this thing. I take things apart all of the time and this one looks intimidating both due to the sheer number of screws involved and the weight of some of the parts.

This is after I already had to get the hood replaced because it would pull the the gasket. I feel like I have a lemon.....
