Exterior Paint Bubbling - Ironwood 650

I got an extra Heat Deflector and cut it. Hopefully it helps.
Nice work on the shields. Hope they help on the new replacement grill.
I am living with my bubbling I guess. If I have to fortunate with it, at least it isn't visible from the outside of the grill on mine. It is inside the downdraft
Not impressed with Traeger’s response to it with the money paid to purchase the grill

Does anyone have this heat deflector around the downdraft vents on their Ironwood? Have never seen before, wondering if on the 2020 model

Thanks, I got an extra lower shield to cut and extend the shield. There's now a shield around the downdraft vents, I updated my previous post and circled it. I had paint bubble inside and out around those vents, so getting that extra shield could be helpful. I call Traeger and the newer F model parts aren't in their system yet, so the agent couldn't help me... 2019=TFB65BLE and 2020=TFB65BLF & includes a Pellet Sensor and possibly this new heat shield...just trying to prevent paint from bubbling again, and haven't burnt in the replacement yet.

nice work - too bad you have to modify it darn it just in hopes it will save you some grief - did you mention in my situation I should be asking them for a 'lower heat shield' for any replacement TL850? thanks a lot

I actually did get an IW885 Shield as well, but it's about 3" too wide. Contemplating cutting it, but will need to bed it, etc and it's not the easiest metal to work with. What does the TL850 shield look like?

I am not sure have not gotten into the bottom of it yet but I will here shortly if in fact it does exist - still working with the distributor of this TL850 I am already having issues with - this guy told me the TL850 1300 Cadillac of Traeger lineup and then moments later said the Ironwood was a better cooker - wow - I had once had an IW650 and the inside of the barrel was rusting so Traeger replaced it

This came up in another thread so I thought I would start a new thread here to see who has had this issue and what (if anything) Traeger has done to rectify it for you.

I had my grill for less than a week and the first time I went to sear on it, the paint bubbled in two spots where the heat shield ends. Sounds like others have had this issue as well, and are noticing bubbling in other spots as well.

I contacted the store that I bought it from and they are dealing with Traeger. So far no response.

Anyone else had this, and if so, any fix from Traeger? Seems like the exterior coating they applied isn't quite durable enough.
Hi Jon - your photo on the right appears to be exactly like mine - only difference is mine is a TL850 and the blistering occurred on the back left hand corner of the down draft on the barrel itself - let me share a picture with you - I am also seeing the lid gasket already falling off amazing $1800 plus a cover $80 nearly - $1900 - I had just completed 'seasoning your grill' pages 11 & 12 of the accompanying Owners Manual and then found this blistering - it is larger than a 50 cent piece in area - space about 1.5 inches length and 1 inch wide - and I say what's next ???? Yeah I called the BBQ Store where I had just purchased it the manger there was a putz he said it's a Traeger issue and I told him you may not care but you just lost my business -
$1900 retail for this - not acceptable in your case nor mine

Exactly, it is more about the cost of the unit. Had I purchased a cheaper brand I probably wouldn't be concerned. But the cost of an Ironwood in CDN $$ is pretty substantial. I didnt pay as much for the self cleaning oven/stove in my house. The paint hasn't bubbled or peeled on it. That oven gets a lot higher in temperature with the self cleaning.
I had sent an online submission last Friday and haven't heard back yet. I will try the two email addresses I have and see how they respond to correcting the issue in the next day or so.
I am fortunate in the sense that mine isn't visible on the outside because it's behind the downdraft chimney. It is only really visible on the inside.
But this is what you know about and what you can see - it is what you don't know about and what you cannot see and what may happen in the future with this smoker and that's exactly right we pay for less for our kitchen ovens/stoves what have you and never have any issues peeling blistering popping paint at all never

In my case the Traeger Distributor who supplied the TL850 to the BBQ Store admitted that there was a manufacturer's defect most likely - sure it is a defect and he knows it - well what's there to think about Traeger Warranty 3 years against manufacturer's defects... WTH

Yeah, the support I received from the store I bought from was basically non-existent. If you kick and scream enough by phoning customer support they will eventually send you a new one. I recommend calling first thing in the morning to avoid crazy wait times. When you pay this much you expect hassle-free quality but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. I haven't even used the new grill they sent me yet for fear that it is going to happen again and I will have to go through the whole process all over again. MikeyR has been doing a good job of shielding up his unit and I'll be exploring that path too. I made one call to customer service to inquire about receiving an extra shield (like MikeyR received) but the agent I had was useless and then the call got cut off. Sigh....

My Pro 22 superheated on smoke mode. The grill is only a month old. It was on for about 10 minutes. The temp was at 379 degrees ! The Auger was pumping in pellets non stop. Something seriously malfunctioned. I put in a warranty claim direct with Traeger. Its been a week since I put in the claim. I waited patiently but finally had to call back. The claims rep at the factory said she was busy this past week and apologized for the delay. She has to get with the technical department to go over the issue and find out what to do ... Meanwhile I am not using the smoker and still waiting patiently ...

Not to downplay this because I would be very frustrated with this too especially when it is difficult to deal with customer service but paint issues have happened with other companies too. Yoder (made in the USA) among them. It seems hard to believe they can't find a solution to this. If it were my company, I would want to fix this and make it right to make the customers happy.

The issue is not the bubbling paint but the malfunction with: The control module, temp probe or auger, whatever it is, that caused the temperature of the unit to reach 379 degrees on smoke mode.
