where do all yall set the cap on the end of the smokestack?

so guys , have a question for everyone. where should the cap on top of the smokestack be set to? mine is maybe a half inch gap can be seen through, but i see some with a big gap - 1" to more - or no cap. what do yall all think of this one in the pic? i think it looks kool, but prolly doesnt serve a real good function

If your smoke is white as shown in your photo, it means the fire is not getting enough air for clean burning. You want to open the damper until you get a thin, blue smoke.
Thick white smoke tends to produce a bitter result.

My Ironwood 885 does not have a smokestack, but other than the initial startup of the fire pot, I cannot see the smoke coming out of the grill; but it smells wonderful.
