Traeger instructions say that the pellets must be stored in a container with a tight lid inside a room other than a garage. This is a problem for me because I have limited space inside to store the pellets. I would like to have 3 or 4 pellet options, but I don't have space to store that many. Is what Traeger says true? Any suggestions?

You really just want to make sure they are protected from moisture/humidity. I live in FL (humid climate) and store mine in the garage. I use these lids on a 5-gallon Home Depot bucket and they work just fine. Cheaper than the Traeger storage bins and you can stack them.

I agree with traeger860, I also store mine in 5 gallon buckets and they are kept outside. I also sieve mine through a piece of 1/4 inch screen. This allows all the fine dust and small particles to be eliminated prior to using. There is always fine sediment and pieces in the bags depending how they were handled before you purchased them. Keeping the fines out helps in preventing auger binds and back fires. I wasn't aware of the Bucket Companion that traeger860 mentioned, but they are now on my shopping list. Welcome to the forum, great folks and great recipes.

I use five gallon HD buckets with the lids and store in my outdoor grill station that's covered with a generic grill cover. My IW 650 stays outside covered with a Traeger cover. I never remove the pellets from the hopper. I checked the pellets yesterday in preparation for a New Years day cook. They're solid and shiny so good to go. My bulk supply is stored in HD buckets in my garage which is subject to seasonal variations in SoCal (40F to 100F). I see too much over thinking on this subject, which I admit to initially but if you avoid direct water impingement they last a long time.

I keep unopened (make sure there are no holes) bags in the garage on a shelf rather than sitting on the floor. Opened bags I tip into airtight dry food containers which are kept outside in a garden storage unit beside the Traeger. I empty the Traeger hopper if the pellets are likely to be left more than a few days or the weather forecast is for rain given the pellets are hygroscopic.

This is excellent advise, it is amazing the amount of shrapnel that comes off a newly opened bag of pellets with to my mind Traeger being one of the worst offenders!

Go to Firehouse Subs and get used food grade 5 gallon pickle buckets. They are stackable. Cost $5/buckle with lid

I leave mine outside. If I have an open bag I make sure its sealed, and I've been doing that since 2013 and never had a problem with my pellets.

I keep mine in a sealed container but it sits on a shelf in my garage as well as I keep a full bag on hand as well as my lump charcoal usually in an open bag. My 780 Pro sit under a roof but in the elements and I don’t unload the hopper. Haven’t had any issues in over two years, maybe lucky IDK. I used to cook a lot on it but being a Homebuilder I’ve been so busy I don’t cook much anymore. I was semi retired but the profits on new homes are unbelievable great. Ride this train while I can. I can cook when it slows down, lol.

I have 2 of these, had them for 4 years now and always outside. They work just fine

This is my storage space, I just bought another bag of pellets the other day from Costco, they are in my shop.
