Pellets Royal Oak Charcoal Pellets

Have to wonder if some of the strong off-profile smoke flavor could have been from the mesquite. That wood has a strong output of smoke flavor and not something that is liked by a lot of people. I used up my charcoal pellets. I had Lumberjack and Pit Boss. I didn't mix them with any othwr pellets and they both seemed fine. In the end I wound up mixing them together.
Might be worth another 'test'. Try not mixing them with any other wood pellet or maybe try a lighter smoke profile wood pellet
I personally don't mind mesquite smoke, but thought it may be worth mentioning seeing many don't like it

I have never tried straight Mesquite pellets in the Traeger, but I had used Mesquite chips in my gas grill smoker box. Using the combination of Mesquite and Charcoal blend did not work, but I also used the same combination in a couple of smoke tubes that were a recent combination. If I had omitted the smoke tube, it might have been fine.

I have not given up on either the charcoal blend pellets or the mesquite pellets, but I won't use them in combination. Next time I do a beef cook, I might blend the mesquite with oak and hickory. Or I might use the charcoal with something other than mesquite. Failed experiments are part of the scientific process, but that does not mean you should quite experimenting.

I have used mesquite pellets several times (alone and in the hopper) and it wasn't overwhelming. But then again, my 780 doesn't seem to produce a lot of smoke anyway.

I understand. I might have been OK had I not used two smoke tubes. Also, the charcoal pellets are supposed to burn hotter than wood pellets. That might have changed the type of reactions that occurred when combined with Mesquite. It was a failed experiment, but I will try again.
