Pro 780 exchange for Ironwood 650

I recently bought a Pro 780 because I couldn't find an Ironwood 650. Well now turns out I found one at the same dealer that wasn't listed in online inventory. So, for a net difference of $54, I can exchange the 780 for the 650, including all the accessories I bought for it. I don't need the extra real estate of the 780, I only cook for my small family. I just think the 650 has features that are more efficient.

Talk me out of it.
I have two Ironwood 650s that I bought in the last few months, one for me and one for my son. Great bbq but I have not been able to get either one to connect to WIFI and yes, I have over five hours clocked with customer service with no luck. Traeger has sent out three modules so far with updates…….The 650s are at two different residences. You might get lucky, I didn’t.

Both devices have to be connected to the same 2.4 GHz channel on your wi-fi when you pair the 1st grill. I had a problem getting the 780 to connect. I set my guest network to 2.4 and switched my phone over to the guest network and they paired right away. I then switched my phone over to my normal 5GHz channel. The 780 stayed connected and when I set-up the 650, it connected right away. Both grills were on the 2.4 guest network and still connected to my phone on the regular 5 GHz channel.

My 780 connected to the network first time I tried. Either I'm a damn network geniuses or just lucky. There was a beer sitting on the hopper when I was connecting, and let's just say it wasn't my first...or even my third beer...so I am going with the latter. :D

My 575 connected easily as well. First try

As I stated in my comment, we have been on the phone with Traeger customer service for over a total of five hours dealing with WIFI connectivity on the 650 and have tried every troubleshooting option that they have in their system but…..
We tried your recommendation again. We started by moving the Traeger into the house, two feet from the router. We then did exactly what you recommended, twice using the guest network at 2.4……same result…fail to connect!!! We were notified today by Traeger that they are sending out a new module, this will be the third for this machine which has never been able to connect to WIFI. Very frustrating as I have two 650s at two different residences that will not connect. Searching the web, there are a multitude of customers with the same problem and as of yet, Traeger has not been able to find a programming fix. Some work and some don’t,

Frustrating, why Traeger didn't use external antennas on all models is just dumb. No grill should have weak WiFi.
I am by no means a tech but I don’t think this is weak WIFi. I think it has something to do with either the ap or module software program. The second module that Traeger sent out as a replacement still did not have the current software update on it and this was a replacement for the original that was way out of date. Hopefully the third one they are sending out will have current software and solve my issues.
I have over 2k in Traeger bbqs and if I could have, I would probably have returned both of them……..

Does the grill recognize the wi-fi? Can you see your router on the grill display?

WiFi is already quite complicated and with every iteration it is getting more so. The latest routers and mixing 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz to maximize throughput. RemE recently suggested setting up a dedicated 2.4 GHz access point for the Traeger. This is what I did awhile ago for all the smart devices in the house and this network has different name. The main router at its network is only for computers and phones. Setting this up solved all my problems with the various smart devices and Traeger connected to it right away.

Yes….We have gotten to the ‘downloading files’ display multiple times and then went into the fails to connect display after minutes. We have also gotten the unable to download certificate display. Traeger has also done multiple factory resets and nothing. Hopefully, the new module will arrive with the up to date software and solve the problem. Again , neither 650 will connect and they are at two totally different residences three miles apart. Both residences have Comcast as the provider…..

Ya, that's a bad situation you have. My Timberline is almost 2 years old now. It was on original Gen2 firmware. About 9 months in, Traeger went to a new backend server (AWS I believe). They updated the grill's and a few of us were down for weeks but were able to finally reconnect. But there was a no return point that many who didn't update, and unsold grills in the pipeline couldn't update that were now orphaned.

The only recourse was a new controller with a high enough minimum firmware level to be able to connect to the "new" backend servers.

But assuming good firmware. The pairing sequence is critical. Having your phone connected to a known good 2.4ghz network, temporarily "forgetting" any auto connect 5ghz network so the phone does not inadvertently change networks during setup.

You initially connect your phone directly to the grill's built-in WiFi by scanning the QR code. Then the grill uses your phone to scan for networks, you pick your 2.4ghz network, the phone passes this info and login to the grill. The grill now severs the phone connection, logs directly onto your home network. Your phone now auto connects, hopefully, your home network. From now on, the phone connects INDIRECTLY to the grill via Traeger's servers. At this point you can connect your phone to any network you like.

You can verify the grill's wifi network connection and signal strength in the grill's settings under WiFi.

I've had 3 controllers for unrelated issues, all of them connected without issue, and some went thru updates once connected.

But in any case ensuring good WiFi signal to your grill area is important for reliable performance.

I bought both Traeger 650s at the same time and after reading your post, think that they both had the old firmware because I could never update. During my initial contact with customer service, we at some point checked the firmware and I was advised that both Ironwoods were out of date. Traeger then sent out another two controllers. During our most recent customer service experience, we again checked the firmware on the replacement controllers and I was advised that they were not up to date firmware either…….hence, I’m waiting on a third controller with what I hope is the most recent firmware update. As a side note, Traeger would only send out one controller and I was advised that that was because they are expensive at about $400. Soooooo, if this one works, I still have one Ironwood not working.
