This exact thing happened to me in late fall. I clean/vacuum my 780 every 2 cooks. I only use Traeger pellets that I store in 5 gal plastic buckets, so there should be no/little moisture in the pellets. It did exactly as OP described. It took a long time to start, got the low temp message, then all of a sudden the damn thing was on fire.. I was able to pull the grill, drip tray and heat shield off using oven mitts (that I destroyed in the process) and the hot pot and everywhere around the hot pot was filled with whole pellets and on fire of course. I was kind of in a hurry because I was cooking for a large group and had to switch to oven roasting instead of smoking so I didn't get any photos. I basically left it all winter and cleaned it out yesterday. there were charred whole pellets stuck to the inside oval heat shield at the bottom on the outside of the hot pot. After vacuuming i started it up. It still took a long time to pre-heat and gave another warning, but shortly thereafter was able to get to 225 and maintain. I'm not sure if i need to replace the hot pot? It eventually worked, and the fan sounded fine. I will probably need to replace the drip tray because it warped due to high heat, and as other stated, melted aluminum foil to it, which isn't a big deal, but damn it got hot. So either it overfilled on startup, or it did something during the previous shutdown?
