Pellets Ol' Hick

Well, since Traeger pellets are: flavored wood pellets and a method of making flavored wood pellets. The wood pellets of this invention include wood particles, lubricant, and wood oil. Another aspect of the invention is a method that includes mixing wood particles with lubricant and wood oil, heating the mixture, and forming the mixture into pellets.

Then just about anything has more smoky taste...

Thanks for the report

So what you are saying is the Ol' Hick has more wood particles, therefore more smoke?

The way I interpret the patent is that Traeger is able to use cheap, flavorless wood, then add "stuff" to the pellets to imitate wood flavor. Kind of like the difference between generic brand imitation maple syrup and real A grade amber maple syrup. Both can be sold as tasting like maple syrup, but in reality, they just don't taste the same.

Almost every pellet has more wood particles than Traeger!!!

Read for yourself

In case anyone isn't aware (I believe most on here know this already), Traeger doesn't necessarily use 100% wood in their pellets. Here is their patent where it specifies it in the abstract: US Patent 7517371

Based on the information and feedback from this Group combined with my own trials; why would anyone continue to use Traeger Pellets?

Typically are higher priced and less smoke flavor. Change the wood/wood mix and temperatures/time to adjust smoke flavor/.intensity.

I have just about burnt through my Traeger pellets and when they’re gone they’re gone.
Same here, with the exception of Cherry.
I can’t find PB or BM Cherry locally, so I still buy the Traeger Cherry.
For some reason the Traeger Cherry pellets just seem to work fantastic for chicken, and I get a rich smoky flavor when using them.

I just picked up a bag of the Pit Boss fruit blend to try because I am about out of the Traeger Cherry. It’s cherry, apple and maple. I did some bacon with it but haven’t eaten any yet so not sure what the flavor profile will be.

I will probably get a bag of Traeger Alder now that I think about it. I like to use that on scallops.

I couldn’t find the PB fruit blend, but I did notice that Walmart has a Cherry Rum 20 pound bag. Don’t recall who makes them, but it sounds good enough to try..😁

Finally burned through all my Traeger pellets! From now on it will be either Pit Boss or Bear Mountain. Here is the plan for me locally:
Pit Boss for Hickory and Apple from Walmart - $9/bag
Pit Boss for Cherry from Lowe's - $12/bag
Bear Mountain for Oak from Tractor Supply - $10/bag

These are national chains so their prices/availability should hold everywhere, including in Canada.
