New pellets being introduced this week (6/10/21) - Royal Oak 100% Charcoal Pellets

I made an 80/20 type of blend with the charcoal I have and a bag of Traeger pellets I had let.
Figured 20% of the charcoal pellets should be manageable by the auger when it has the lubricated Traegerpellets in the mix. I used that mix once last year and it didn't seem to be a problem. Didn't notice and grinding or cracking noises and didn't get an auger fire from them.
I will use this mix again this summer
And will probably burn them in my smoke tube while doing steaks, roasts or chicken on the Traeger just to use them up

I saw these at Sportsman’s Warehouse.

I used them a while back, I didn’t notice any difference in taste or smell. Definitely not worth the money.

I remember back in the1970s when my in-laws heated their home with coal-fired boiler. Many of their neighbors used coal as well. The aroma that settled over the town was not nearly as pleasant as those who burned wood in stoves.

I do have a bag of Pit Boss charcoal blend pellets (not 100% charcoal). I once tried them mixed with other pellets in a smoke tube. I got smoke, but the taste of the meat was not at all pleasant. I had to turn the beef into a stew to disguise the off-flavor.

In order to use the remaining charcoal blend pellets, I will toss a handful or two of the pellets into the hopper when doing a hotter cook. (350F and higher). When doing low and slow cooks, I want the aroma of hardwood to shine through. Charcoal is great for grilling as it can get quite hot, but at lower temperatures the combustion byproducts are not nearly so pleasant. That is why when cooking with charcoal, the practice is not to start cooking until the charcoal is covered with gray ash.

I have a bag a friend gave me and I’ve yet to open them

Somehow in the course of it all I wound up with 2 smokers, a gas grill, and a weber kettle. Ridiculous. :) Charcoal pellets sound like a great idea but not if they cause damage.
