My First Attempt at Pellet Grilling

I'm going to hold off a bit on buying a temperature probe. I WANT to buy the wifi Inkbird but probably SHOULD continue to use the Traeger onboard probe and get the MK4 to spot check with. FB is still on the table too . . . 🤯🤣🤣

my .02 is you absolutely need an instant read thermometer, and I think the MK4 at $69 is a great deal.

I've had thermoworks thermapen classic for years, and was still considering getting an MK4 on the closeout sale.

I have a Thermoworks smoke too and it works great to monitor smoker temps. I didn't want wifi as I like to be able to unplug from my phone while grilling, but I like being able to see temps anywhere in the house/yard. There are lots and lots of choices for remote temp probes.

Back to the chicken. I've started cooking both beer can and rotisserie chicken to at least 170 and often 175. I've found if I pull them off at 165 the thighs seem under done even though the temps say it is at 165. I don't usually do spatchcock so YMMV.

good luck.

If you know someone with any external thermometer, ask them if you can borrow it for a cook. You might find the traeger onboards are spot on, or they may be a little off. Knowing if they read high or low can help.

I have one of these. Would it be goo

Reaction time is probably going to be pretty slow, and you would have to verify if it reads temps correctly. I am not familiar with the Oneida brand.

I had an old AccuRite thermometer that looked exactly like that, and I suspect that it’s just rebranded.

First of all, that’s not meant to be an instant read like the Thermapen (that is a leave in thermometer), and second, mine wasn’t even close to being accurate.
I think I paid $20.00 for it at Walmart.
