Ironwood XL slow warmup.

I should have given a little bit more detail, before giving up I was on the phone with two different “level 3 “supervisors, both of which, when they looked at the data said that for this unit those heat up times are absolutely normal.
When I asked them, why did they replace my first Trager? The response I received was that they were placed it because of the stripped screws in the pellet hopper, so I was unable to change the lid sensor. To this, I replied the purpose of changing the lid sensor was because you guys felt that this is why it was, slow to heat up, they kept disagreeing and said they gave me a new unit because of the strip screws to that. I said that if there were stripped screws, but the unit was working normally why would you bother changing it because those screws are irrelevant. To that they went back and said , the heat up times are normal and it is OK to allow a steak to sit for 30 to 40+ minutes resting while I heat up the unit for the reverse sear. Even though the second unit produced this same data as the first and the replaced the first one.
I even pointed out the fact that one of their first level support the video to document heat up times, first I had to set the grill to 185°, which it was supposed to reach within a certain amount of time, it never got above 165°, and then the second part of the test was to heat it up to I believe 350° again which it did not reach for 30+ minutes. Even with video evidence with their support staff using their software to access my phone for video they stood pat that this is normal.
Fortunately, the local business that I purchased the unit from completely understood, and stood by their service so they took the unit back.
This soured my experience so much that I went to a weber summit S670 and couldn’t be happier.
I had the same experience with a screw when I replaced my lid sensor because CS was complaining that I opened the lid to much. Luckily I was able to grab that screw with a pair of pliers and got it loose. I was concerned about getting another XL and Your experience i just read tonight confirms my decision not to get another XL. I benched my XL during the cold snap here and brought out my trusty 885, and again it didn’t disappoint. I think my small ironwood heats to 500f almost as quick as my 885. It may be too soon to be making that claim but this small ironwood heat up pretty good.

Fyi it only made it to 385f on the seasoning and I had to do it again, very similar to my XL but the XL didn’t go over 300f.

I just fired up my Ironwood XL. Its -8 here and it took 20 min to get to 225
That seems normal if thats the temp you like to cook at. Getting the grill up to 500f to burn it off after a cold cook is a different story. One my brother didn’t believe until he tried it on his timberline XL.

Well, after using the ironwood L for a bit. I can say these next generation grills are more of a smoker than a grill. It works exactly like my XL, it does warm up faster but it cooks the same.

Yeah, I agree. One of the complaints with older models that has definitely been improved is noticeably more smoke flavor. No need for an extra smoke tube now.

Yep the increased flavor is definitely there.

It’s actually a little disappointing, a love hate relationship, they are nice grills but not the performer of the older ones. I was hoping this new addition would be better, and it kinda is for startups but I was disappointed to see the difference in the temp with the 3rd party thermometer in the smaller one. I enjoy grilling in the winter but not when a cook takes longer than it should.

I have a decision to make if I store the L for the winter and use the 885.

My Ironwood XL warmed up in 20 minutes to 350F, very happy with that.
Next cook will check temps a bit closer by using my Tappecue touch chamber probe and see what the difference is.

Yes it will in the summer, and is inconsistent, and it seems they struggle past the temp you mentioned. I am going back to my 885 for the winter, I have big cooks planned for December and I don’t trust the new ones with a colder than readout firebox.

Just wondering if anyone else is having issues with their 2023 Ironwood. My issue is that my XL won’t reach temp - didn’t during the seasoning session or in two subsequent cooks. Tonight, set it to 350 and after two hours, it maxed at 338. Called Traeger all three times for troubleshooting, with no resolution. Was told to wait two days and try again so they could monitor the start up. Doesn’t seem like that’s a solution - for a machine this expensive, would have expected a bit better.
Hi
Having similar with my 2023 Ironwood XL
Long time to reach temp and huge temp swings; sometimes +/-120 deg
CS advised at start up to set to 160 and when reached set desired temp. Now CS says that is the problem; at startup set desired temp
Had an old Pro 34, not one issue other than it got old
Have already replaced the lid sensor in Ironwood as CS said the temp decrease was the grill thinking the lid was open when it wasnt
Just wish could get a fix

Just bought this thing at Christmas. ironwood .
im getting temp swings of over 100 degrees.
not opening the lid, brand new pellets, I’m doing this by the book?
defective or normal?

Is it a XL or the smaller one. My smaller one wanders around on temp bad. Hits high temp alot as well.

I have the Costco version Silverton 810.
It takes 30min to get to 400 deg.
I’m hoping there is a retro fit we can do - bigger blower, larger fire pot, updated auger microcode for more fuel.

Get to work Traeger so we can brag about how hot these grills are :).

Had I joined this forum before I bought my Pro 22 in Nov 23, I likely would not have bought a Traeger. Hearing all the problems users are having with the newer technology units as well as lousy CS, Traeger is shooting itself in the foot as far as marketing is concerned. I upped to the Pro 22 from my old (tried and true) Weber WSM (Bullet) because I was tired of the continual battle with adjusting vents and watching the water bowl on the Weber and liked the idea of "set it and forget it" with a pellet smoker. Price point on the Pro 22 was a major factor for me, as well as the maxim "the fewer the moving parts, the less to break down".
The Pro 22 works well for me, and I have tossed the Traeger temp probes and switched to Thermoworks probes for reliable temperature readings. But it's just a smoker; I use my Weber Genesis gas grill for grilling.
