I recently had an HEr reading and high temp burn that melted the aluminum grease tray liner in the grill before it shut off. I was getting smoke coming out of the hopper, which had never happened before. After consulting with Grill Parts and Accessories company in Massachusetts I ordered, received and replaced the two gaskets, the large rectangle between the hopper and the body and the one on top of the opening to the auger from the hopper. Before I got and installed the new parts I emptied the hopper and vacuumed out all parts of the grill body. I used the grill several times and it performed well, so I thought the problem was solved. Recently I turned the grill on to the smoke setting. For 5-10 minutes the grill sat there at the lowest temperature reading, with no smoke developing. Eventually, as I was about to give up, the temperature went up and it started smoking. I set it to a higher temperature and left it to heat. When I came back outside a few minutes later it showed the HEr reading and had burned up the aluminum grease tray liner. A day later I took the grill, grease tray and baffle out of the body so I could watch the firepot. Vacuumed the entire inside and firepot. I started up the grill and saw the pellets ignite, then burn hotter and hotter until the HEr symbol came on and shut the grill down. All this happened on the smoke setting. I am at a loss as to what to replace or buy a new grill. Help!

Sounds like you’ve got a persistent issue with the grill. Given the HEr reading and temperature spikes, it might be worth checking the temperature sensor or control board next. Sometimes these components can malfunction and cause erratic behavior. Also, make sure there’s no blockage in the airflow. If everything else looks good and the problem persists, it might be time to consider a new grill.

Thanks. That is what I was going to consider. The price to change out the control board and sensor is about 1/4 the price of a new grill and we have had this one for 6-8 years, so seriously thinking about a new grill The metal unit that holds the firepot is rusting out and this is not a part that can be replaced. I had previously replaced the firepot, drip tray and heat baffle and not sure I want to sink anymore money into this grill.
