Yes, wrapping (i.e. providing some shade) for the grills is essential during the initial low temperature phase of a cook.

Lets say you are trying to keep the temperature at 180. With direct sunlight this means the grill should be at the equivalent of 145-150 degrees. No way can the controller maintain that.

I believe you are correct. It’s amazing what the sun will do. And these aren’t even plugged in yet!
