A Deep Dive into the Grease Pan of the Timberline

That's good news! Glad it's working.

The only other thoughts on grease in the barrel would be meat dripping behind the pan if it were too far back or off one side etc.

Or even a warped pan.

Just musing...
Did a 15# turkey yesterday so this morning decided to check the barrel. Darn, there was grease in the barrel again. So I made a closer observation of the tray liner. I saw where I didn't have the liner creased on the left side of the tray as well as I should have so I'm thinking that's where it was running over. At least there was a large puddle of grease on that corner. So when I replaced the liner I made sure it is lying flat on the corner. Will try this again and see what happens.

I still have a little grease leaking so today I pulled the pan out to do some investigative work. I looked at that tray & asked myself why am I using the lid. So I put the liner in the tray & put it back together with out the lid. Now I’ll see if I have any more problems.

The lid is important! It seals the drip pan to the grill chamber, preventing the grill from exhausting thru the pan!!

Ok, RemE, I guess I'm a little stupid here but what is grill exhausting? By the way, at your suggestion, I have the lid back in place.

The grill barrel is pressurized by the fan blowing air into the fire pot. It circulates the smoke and hot gasses around the food, and then exits out the exhaust ports in the back. The drip drawer with lid, seals to the barrel so this pressurized air in the barrel won't flow thru the drip tray as well as the rear ports.

Thank you for your excellent explanation. I sure appreciate your help. I bought some PIG blankets at Auto Zone yesterday to catch any grease spills from dripping on my rubber mat.

I hope I'm not over-optimistic here but it appears I think I have my problem cleared up. I grilled a pound of bacon yesterday at 350˚ and no grease dripping anywhere. So RemE, thanks for all your help & support.

Since I did the mod for the grease tray I have had zero issues and have never been happier with my Traeger Timberline 850. I made biscuits and gravy on it last night. I baked the biscuits in the Traeger and on my induction I did the sausage and gravy and add that mixture to the baked biscuits and cooked for another 10 minutes. Awesome!

I came across this post after having a lot of grease inside the barrel of my Timberline 1300. I do like your improvised piece of metal at the spout of the grease trough. How is it working now that it's been a couple of years? That seems like a great invention to avoid grease all in the barrel. My goal is to try to remove the long rectangle piece where the fire pot sits as I think some grease made its way underneath, and the only way to clean it is removing that housing. I'd love to hear how it's working now for you.
