780 Pro Knob Troubleshooting

I just got a second hand 780 pro d2 that is in good condition, but was missing the knob on the control panel. I have purchased a new knob from Traeger, but in the meantime I was trying to navigate the menus on the lcd screen and while I can scroll up and down using the silver metal shaft that the knob connects to, I cannot "click" on any options by depressing the shaft. Is this something that wouldn't work without the actual knob installed? I'm not sure if the input for the selection feature of the knob comes from the shaft being depressed, or from something else behind it that is contacted by the knob itself.

I have a Pro 575 which should work the same as the Pro 780. I am sure all that the the knob does is move the metal shaft. I don't know why yours won't click.

I'm pretty sure the knob is just a knob and depressing the shaft is what makes it work. Do you know the person you got the grill from? Missing knob + not being able to "hit enter" could be an ominous sign.

Of course I am just guessing!
