I banged the tip of the thermocouple while cleaning my Pro780 this afternoon. The tip/"nose-cone" cover came off, but the sensor/wire seem OK (see photo). I've ordered a replacement already, but is it safe to use one more time, i.e., this evening? We have tenderloin medallions ready to go, and it would be a crime to broil them , they must be cooked on a grill.

What do you think? OK to use one last time?

(PS My neighbor's Traeger is ready as a back-up).

Yes.....mine looked something like that for awhile until my replacement came in.
Do you have another probe to make sure it's holding steady?

You're fine till you get a new probe... I already bought mine for the day this happens to me.

Great, thanks Slim. Since this will be my second replacement, I should probably buy a spare. Plus, a lot of items on the Traeger "Shop" page are ominously out of stock.....

On a slow boat from China, #122 at the ports, "Now serving #10!!..... #10, please float forward!"

Min s looked like that since the 3rd week of having my grill. The covers been off for awhile now. No issues so far. No replacement coming.

If found them. They should be unloaded and in route to the warehouse some time in May 2022. 🤣

Out of curiosity I checked the Traeger website and the RTD sensor is still available. I should grab spare one myself just like Slim suggested.

Report: It worked well, the medallions came out great (used the Traeger Bacon-Wrapped Tenderloin recipe), temperature was as controlled as usual. Good idea by CMTiger, I used a stand-alone probe to keep an eye on the temperature, and it did the trick. Thanks everyone.

A new trigger pellet grill is a big investment. So it is important for you to do your research before you decide to pull the trigger.

Based on this thread,, I was about to purchase a spare RTD. But with all of the evidence here regarding its inaccuracies, wouldn't it make sense to put that $ toward a 3rd party probe like a Fireboard? Or, does the Traeger need a working RTD in order to operate?

The RTD shown in the picture above controls the pit temp. It needs to be functional in order for the pit to operate. A Fireboard will help accurately monitor the pit temp, but it can't control it.

Yes! Same thing happened to me. Ordered a new coupler but pressed on with the old one since it seemed to still “work”. I never totally relied on that coupler, regardless, but do rely on my commercial probes - Thermoworks. But, if that coupler ceases to operate, there goes your ability to assign and maintain a target temp so it can never be ‘eliminated - just a necessary evil. Traeger has a terrific install video for swapping out the coupler, once it arrives. Good luck!

Thanks. Unfortunately this is my second RTD replacement. Saw the video last time, you’re right, it is good: helpful and clear.
