My older model Traeger doesn't have WIFI. After reading all the problems folks seam to be having, I think I will stay with the old manual controls. When I smoke something I like the hands on method, I started with a lump and chunk smoker. With my old Texas I like to check on it periodically, make sure the pellets are ok, check the temp, mop and slop, wrap, have an excuse to go out on my covered patio and have a cold brew.
My phone is a phone, its a 4 and not a 5 and I see no reason to upgrade my phone to smoke protein. I have high speed fiber optic internet, runs three tv's, two computers, security camera, and probably something else I forgot about. Traeger might be following Microsoft, new up grades that they want you to pay for when your old one works fine. Sorry about the rant, I just prefer hands on smoking. My old Texas is still in great shape, and I can still find replacement parts so I am sticking with it.
I understand that some folks out there want the latest and greatest system with all the bells and whistles, my daughter has a top line phone that has more apps than I can count and I think she could be making payments on a new car for what she pays monthly for all the apps and service.
I think it is bad business for Treager not to have an open platform that allows older phones to be able to communicate to the latest changes. Maybe their programmers don't smoke. I am not trying to offend anyone, I just think that Traeger should be thinking about their existing customers when they make changes.

I bought my pro 780 almost 2 years ago (I think). The only issue I have had to this point is a warped door this spring. Their customer service was excellent and sent me a new door for it immediately.
One issue that others have had include connectivity with their network. Many of those issues were due to folks trying to connect their unit to 5ghz instead of the recommended 2.4ghz. I have no idea why that makes a difference, but it does.
Having come from a Smoke Mountain propane smoker background, I love being able to set up the Traeger app for the cook, and then just relax, and not babysit the smoker.

But, if I had a manual unit that I was used to, and have used for years, I likely wouldn't look to upgrade.

5Ghz is faster but weaker. Can't go through walls as well. 2.4Ghz is slower but greater signal strength.
