Second cook doesn’t get to 500 degrees without problems!

I have the XL and used Lumberjack mixed fruit wood blend and no problem getting to 500, stayed there with 10 degree flux on either side for over a half an hour. Took about 25-30 min to get there. Ambient temp was 85.

I can’t really comment. Other than the burn in I don’t think I’ve set mine over 350

Never had an issue with Calbelas pellets or Jack Daniels (favorite). Takes 20+ min to get around 500 but no issues maintaining 500+deg

My XL will hit and old 500 degrees with no problems. I am at sea level. Are you by chance living at a very high altitude?

Just got the Timberline XL. I'm coming form the Silverton 700 from Costco. The XL took what seemed like forever to heat to 350, let alone 450. I'd estimate it took 50+ minutes to reach 450, and as soon as I opened the grill to place the chicken wings, the temp dropped to 250 immediately, and climbed slowly again.
I used new Traeger Hickory pellets. It was 75 degrees outside.
My grill passed the diagnostic check. Firebox was clean / vacuumed before the cook.
I know the XL has more "space" to heat than my old grill, but I hope future cooks heat up quicker! The heat time honestly was ridiculous.
Anybody with similar experiences?
The only factor that I can think of was that I had 3 Grillgrates sitting on the main cooking grates. Perhaps this interfered with the convection flow? Of note, the grates that came with the grill added a much better crisp to my wings than the Grillgrates did. So perhaps I will sell those along with the old Traeger.

I will do a timed start up and see how long I take to get to 350. (I am going to do some ribs at 275 anyway, so I will drop it back for the cook).
We need to share info on these new XL's. I need to decide that it was "worth the squeeze" as a smoker.

Timed at 21 minutes to cross 350. Ambient temperature outside is 88 deg f and the smoker is in the direct sun. Now I have to drop it back to 275 and drop my ribs for dinner. Baby Backs no wrap and dry (Memphis) finish take about 3 hours at 275.
We shall see. v/r arcee

Thanks for the report. I may be making some Lamb T-bones tonight, so if I do, I'll time the startup. Plus, I'll remove the Grillgrates so there is nothing impeding any airflow in the smoker. Thanks again for timing. I hope others do the same an report.

I have made several notes on my new XL. I previously had a Timberline 850. Overall, I love the grill, but there are some issues that I’m confident Traeger will address. Below are the notes I have made so far:
  • Says “done preheating” way too early- 220 on a 400 degree cook
  • No way to calibrate and adjust the wired probe, even though manual says there is.
  • Got error and restart when sending recipe to grill
  • Takes way too long to get to temp compared to timberline 850. Took 32 minutes to get to 400. Has taken 45 minutes to get to 375
  • Temperature fluctuations range 35 degrees at times
