Ironwood 885
Hi all. I've ordered a new Ironwood 885. While I'm waiting for it to arrive at the store for pick-up, I've been reading as much as I can and collecting a list of things to do, to make my ownership of my 885 as long and happy as reasonably possible.

So, here comes my question. In your opinion, in addition to reading the manual and properly following the documented setup and seasoning process (as well as the documented regular maintenance), what are some things I should consider for my 885 to help ensure I have a long and happy relationship with it?

I'm relatively new to the pellet scene and I may not be aware of those things that have become obvious to the veterans, so I'm just trying to learn what I can. Thanks for your help.

I never run my IW885 over 350 degrees.

That seems to eliminate any paint discoloration or rust. I use my Weber Genesis with Grill Grates for 350 degrees and over.

Same here! I don’t think I’ve ever had my 1300 above 375, except to season it per the instructions. IMO, there are some things that the Weber does better, and things that the Traeger does better..

Thanks for the suggestion.

Since my grill is still on the back of a truck, somewhere, I've been stuck reading instead of smoking (which can be dangerous). One thing I've seen discussed is people adding an additional gasket round the lid (such as Lavalock), in order to get a better smoke seal. Is this worth doing and if so, should I do it before my first firing or should I wait a while before putting it on?

I’m a if it ain’t broke don’t fix it type of guy. I did not add the gasket to my 885 and so far don’t see a need to do so.

I would wait until it is determined that you need it. As Jim g stared “ if it not broken there is no need to fix it”
As treater temperature accuracy is a known issue you might look in to researching a Fireboard and a MK4
