Pit Boss Competition Pellets

I’m shocked nobody has posted this here.

It shows the regular price at 16.99. I think that’s a typo. It should says save $16. So regular price at $28. Plus military/veterans saves even more. Today was s the last day for this deal. I grabbed 2. Competition or not that’s a deal. They had plenty at my local Lowes.

I can get them for only $12 too, but that's in store only, and ends tomorrow. I usually get FREE DELIVERY over $50 but not on this item. ($75 for delivery, I hope that's not another "thanks to POTUS" thing now)

Canadian Tire & Home Depot. Should I be ordering from Amazon?
Home Depot Canadian website has the Pit Boss pellets listed at 39.98/bag for 40LB bags online. Says not available in store, free delivery

Thanks man! Are these pellets good? I know some are made from sawdust, injected with wood oils! Are these all natural wood? Has anyone had any issues with these clogging-up a Traeger? I just read that they are all natural 100% wood and similar quality to Traeger - so I'll give them a shot! Thanks again.

The Traeger Hickory and Mesquite pellets say "naturally flavored hardwood". The others say Natural Hardwood Blend. The Competition pellets are supposed to be a blend of maple, hickory and cherry. They do not say "flavored".

The only Traeger pellets I have used have been Cherry Blend. They say hardwood blend which I presume means they contain at least some cherry wood, but I do not know how much. I find that the Traeger pellets tend to be more easily crushed than other brands. This might be why some test have found Traeger pellets to be somewhat dustier than others.

I have only had two bags of Pit Boss pellets. One was the competition blend, which worked well, produced as much smoke as other similar pellets, and not an abundance of ash. The other was their charcoal blend. I didn't notice any charcoal/BBQ flavor imparted into any of the foods I cooked using it. Neither had any issues getting to a set temperature or holding a set temperature. I would buy them again. There are a few people on the forum in the US using them. They seem to sell them pretty cheap south of the border.
My main go-to pellet brand has been Furtado Farms Pellets. Check out their website, they are in you neck of the woods out east. You may be able to get them locally. I have been ordering from Dickson BBQ. I just ordered 4 bags (30 lbs/bag) and the flat rate freight was under $6 to ship out west.
Experiment with different brands and wood types. Then you k own what works best for you.

Furtado Farms is a fantastic idea - 100% Canadian! And there's a Dickson store not too far from me, so I'll definitely make a trip up there and get some! Looks like they're on sale too for $29.99/bag. Thanks a lot man!

Hope you find something you like. Dickson's has a great variety of rubs and sauces as well.

I've used the Furtado and they are good with minimal dust. Just got a bag of the True North. I do want to try the charcoal pellets to see what they are like. Dickson BBQ at Vaughan Mills is a good store.

Brama in Vaughan carries Furtado as well.

I have used a few varieties of Pit Boss pellets. The only problem I encountered was when I mixed a 50/50 blend of PB Charcoal Blend and PB Mesquite Blend. I also filled two smoke tubes with that same mixture. The resulting smoke imparted a rather weird flavor to the beef I was smoking. It was not so unpleasant that I could not eat the meat, but I did add some BBQ sauce to cover up the taste of the meat. This was a chuck roast that was cooked until it was fork tender, so the roast was in smoke for quite a while.

I might have been fine if I had not used the smoke tubes, but I do not plan on mixing those two specific blends again. I will use both bags, but in combination with other pellets to make the smoke less bitter.

I am really annoyed that you cannot get Furtado Farms pellets south of the border! I live an hour away from the border and will have to make pellet run one of these days, when they have lifted all COVID restrictions. I am also planning to try some Knotty Wood pellets.

I think Pit Boss pellets are fine, but prefer Bear Mountain pellets which is my standard brand.

Green Mountain Grill pellets are really good if you can find them locally
