New to pellet grills. Got my brand new Timberline 850 today. Did the initial seasoning. Here’s my 2 concerns/questions:

1) initial ignition took 14 minutes. Is that normal?

2) more important question...I only saw smoke come out for a minute or two during the entire 1 hour plus initial seasoning process (which was probably the oil burning off rather than actual smoke from the pellets). Did I not see much of any smoke because the seasoning is done at temps that are too high - 350 and 500 degrees? Or was I still supposed to see a significant amount of smoke?

Thanks for your help!

Pellet grills don't impart or generate the smoke of a stick burner. Especially at higher temperatures, the pellet grill efficiency burns the pellets cleanly, especially above 225 F. Offset smokers and Kamado grills will give you smoke at higher temps, that's why you will see some cooks saying 275 for smoking. It really depends on your grill.
If you want smoke on a pellet grill, under 225 is where you'll want to be. Usually on these, the lower the temp, the more smoke is generated. Don't expect billowing smoke either, you will see what is considered thin blue smoke.

Got it...thank you!

These are not the correct terms or names of these parts but basically the tube for the pellets to the burner had to be primed with pellets. If you skipped this step it may have taken a little longer to light. As far as the smoke goes, blue smoke which is harder to see, is the best. My 650 Ironsides basically cooks as a convection oven and that smoke is present all of the time. You can super smoke at 225 and below but even cooking without super smoke everything has plenty of that smoky taste, at least in my opinion. Good luck and have fun with your new toy!
