Grill
Ironwood 885
I recently purchased an Ironwood 885. In the top right of the inside of the grill, above the top grate, is this little stick coming out of the side. What is this piece called and what is its purpose?

Yeah.....so in short.....that’s your internal pit probe. RTD temperature sensor. It monitors the temperature inside of your grill and is utilized to hold the temperature to your desired setting

Also be careful removing your grates when you clean out your 885. You can damage it which could potentially be no bueno

It is the HEART of your smoker and everything depends on what TEMP it is reading at any given time.

Keep it CLEAN, do not bump or hit it or damage it, and DO NOT put food right next to it or any other metal pan or item.

It needs to freely READ your internal PIT TEMP at all times.

mild soapy paper towel for some but I've used alcohol and gentle rub

I use Traeger cleaner sprayed on a paper towel, then wipe gently as to not damage the rtd.

I've done that too... (y)

Thanks guys. Was really just curious if the Traeger cleaner was worth it. I’ve just been cleaning my probes with soapy water.

Lot of folks swear by the Traeger cleaner. It’s safe and effective. I’m sure there are plenty of other great options out there as well.

But if you do break it, no worries, it change changed out in under 3 minutes according to this video. :ROFLMAO:

I should have said dedicated probe cleaner.....as that’s what I was really meaning.....as opposed to just soap and water
