Hey all,

I purchased a 780 this past Christmas. Recently it rained very hard and I didnt have my tarp on and the rain water got inside my auger and turned the pellets inside into hardened sawdust. I didnt know this, and I fired up the smoker, and the auger couldnt rotate and broke a small pin inside. I am not sure how to go about fixing this exactly. I know I need the small pin inside which snapped from Traeger. Everything else is fine. I have attached some pics, to explain in more detail. If anyone has gone through something similar please let me know:

1. smk5 - This is the actual pin that I would need from Traeger, it's broken in half. The middle part of the pin is still inside the hole in the auger.
2. smk1a - That's the hole in the auger the pin goes in and out of. You may not be able to tell, but the middle section of the pin is still stuck in there.
3. smk2a - Here is a close up and you can now see that the hole still has a piece of metal inside it. That is the mid-section of the pin. You can also notice the hole is partially covered and cannot be rotated to expose fully.
4. smk4 - A top down view.

So I basically have two issues, one to order just that tiny pin from Traeger and then to some how get the section of the broken pin out of the hole to then insert the new pin. So anyone have a similar issue or have any advice on how to get the pin out? Thanks yall.

Good find Rusty, but I don't know why they even offer a quick release pin? I would be tempted but that release ring could get CAUGHT on something or wedged in there. I'd put a small short cotter pin where the ring is instead if it were me. Just saying.

They sell the one like he had in there with a shear bolt and nut combo. It is shown on that page. If there is nothing that the pin can come in contact with it shouldn't be an issue. I just prefer the security of knowing it isn't coming out. You would need to find a cotter pin that filled the void, you wouldn't want any slack in the bolt hole.
They list it as a 'kit', so maybe you get both options. I would want to change it with something that will shear like the OP had happen as opposed to damaging a motor or breaking something else

Yeah I know, I was surprised they showed the other kind which they say was on older models??
I'm like you, I'd just as soon it breaks or shears than it be a hardened steel replacement.

I suspect this is actually a sheer pin to prevent damage to either the auger or the auger motor in the case of a serious jam.
