Going to return my Weber EX-6

Hey guys,

first time here, first post.

So, I’m going lay this here as it is. I’m Weber guy. Been 15 years. Everything from gas machines to Smokey Mountain Cooker and beyond. Probably owned like 7 Weber’s. 2.5y a go I replaced my WSM with something convinient - or at least I thought so, bought the Weber EX-6 pellet grill. Very long story short, I have more emails with Weber customer care than Elon Musk him buying the Twitter. The warranty is going to end on the electronics next spring and there is no way I’m going to start paying for their cluster ****up.

To the beef of things: The seller of the EX-6 want to make things right. They will take the grill back after 2.5y with full refund. So now I’m looking for a replacement. I already settled for a plan to go back to WSM - that works, ask Harry Soo. But, yeah.. Pellet grill has it’s positive sides. My friend who is connected via work to the hardware store business has been able to get me me a nice deal on the Traeger Ironwood 855. What’s your take on that machine? Don’t want another battle in my hands in terms of weekly breaking grill, with multiple warranty claims and explanations to the family why dinner is 2 hours late.…

With all this said. Would Ironwood 855 be potentially good move?

So...what's wrong with the EX-6 and is it a Gen1 or Gen2?
The Ironwood seems to be a great machine but without knowing what your issues are with the Weber it's hard to say if the Traeger will fix your issues or not.
 
Charcoal grills, bullet smokers and even offset smokers are relatively simple appliances: no electronics at all to deal with. Pellet grills have numerous things that can go wrong. Even the best ones will break more frequently than a cheap bullet smoker.

I think the Ironwood 885 is an excellent grill, but it will need more adjustments than a WSM. To begin with, the Traeger temperature probes are unreliable (as with most pellet grills) and you will need a good third party probe set to make it work. Also, if you are coming from a WSM, don't expect pellets to provide the same level of smoke flavor as charcoal or wood.

I would look at a Recteq. All stainless steel, ceramic igniter, very accurate PID controller and great customer service. I had the WSM, Kettle, and still use my BGE but 90% of the time I use my Recteq.
 
I have a good friend in Munich that loves his Ironwood 885 that he's had for a few years. It's just one of several grills he has but it's one of his favorites.

The big thing about pellet grills is convenience and control.
 
Got my Ironwood 855 today! Can wait to start grilling. …or more smoking.
Enjoy the journey! Just make sure you use a good quality third party temperature probe - Traeger probes can be off by as much as 50 degrees Fahrenheit (about 28 degrees Celsius).
