ironwood 885
Dear all,

Purchased a Ironwood 885 saterday. i have troubles connecting the device to the internet and get tihe update of the firmware. There are two remaining suspects:
1. My too fancy router (netgear Orbi) managing the 2,4/5 ghz itself (like known Eero networking problems)
2. Firmware version 01.01.06 (jan 2020)

Traeger support says that this version is potentially too old to find the update (since this version servers should have been migrated to Amazon. But the websiite says the problem is with version 01.01.04 and older.

Any experience within the forum on updating 01.01.06?

Kind regards,

Kurt

If you have a mobile hot spot on your phone, try connecting the Traeger to that so that you can get on the internet and hopefully update the firmware and config. Then try to connect it to your Orbi again once complete.

Or - create a 2.4ghz guest network on your Orbi and try to get it connected/updated using that. And then re-connect to your main network and shut down the guest network.

Thanks, I have purchased a aimple wifi range extender which I can force on the 2,4 ghz. Wifi. That should proof or eliminate this potential cause. Still have to try this though.

Ruled out the wifi issue with other router. The controller is being sent back for flash update.

I was wondering about this. I have an older model Orbi setup and have not had issues with connectivity with my pro 575.

I am operating a RBR850. So not the newest of the bunch. Controller is now in Denmark for a firmware flash. Fingers crossed!

I have an rbr50 with a rbs 50 satellite and a rbs20 satellite. My pro 575 has an update needed and I'm suppose to leave the grill on overnight. We'll see how that goes

The problem with routers like the Orbi that use the same SSID for both 2.4 and 5 gHz networks is that your phone is always going to try to connect at 5 gHz. It has to connect to 2.4 gHz in order to set up the D2 controller. See if you can set up an SSID for 2.4 gHz on your router. If you cannot, the see if you can disable the 5 gHz radio on your phone so that the phone can connect at 2.4 gHz.

This the catch 22 I guess. Nor Iphone, nor Netgear offers this functionalitu. So bought a cheap TP Link repeater which allows for separation of the 2,4 and 5 ghz network.

Fingers crossed, the controller is en route back from Denmark with the latest firmware flashed on it.

I am glad you were able to update your controller.

For others with a similar issue, there are a few options.

Although you cannot completely disable the 5 gHz network on Orbi routers, you can turn the 5 gHz radio down to a minimum power level and power down the satellites. If you are far enough away from the main router, the cell phone should connect to 2.4 gHz. Of course, you also have to be close to the D2 controller for setup, so you might not find a place that works for both. To give credit where it is due, I found this tip on Reddit.

Adding a second router for that purpose is always an option. Older routers can be purchased for under $20 USD. Your router range extender is another option. When I upgrade, I always keep the previous router as a backup.

The final option is finding a friend who has an Android phone to help. The Android settings do allow you to turn off 5 gHz. Once the D2 controller is set up, you can then use it with your Apple iPhone and your friend's Android can be restored to normal WIFI functionality. Such limitations with iPhones is why I have always preferred Android smartphones; but to each his own. ;)

Update: got controller back with new firmware (oddly enough not the latest). Still struggling to get it connected via my Netgear Orbi. The traeger diagnostics blames the 700 dollar router as diagnostics conclude. “poor connection quality to websites”. It runs on a hotspot though…. So continuing my quest to resolve.

Does anyone know what ports and protocols traeger uses?

Kind regards,

Kurt

Interesting thought. When installeing the controller yesterday, I did not search for such a possibility. Neither did I apot an obbious spot where I could connect such an antenna to the board (dis not notice an antenna connector). Are you talking about the D2 Controller?).

Not sure this will resolve my problem though, as I did my testruns with the router/repeater in my hopper 😉.

Slowly I am getting accustomed to the idea of putting a mifi hotspot into my hopper box 😒

Closing the topic, finally discovered that toning down the power of the 5 ghz of the netgear orbi eouter and pulling away the traeger from the router (so forcing phone and traeger on the 2.4 ghz) did the trick. After pairing set the transmission power back to 5 ghz.

Not a new trick in the book, but one I did not try before.

Thanks for all the input!

Kurt
