I've encountered this phrase "double smoke tubes" a couple of times, but its meaning is unclear. My guess is that one adds a smoke tube with pellets or chips into the smoke box to intensify the smoke around the protein. Is this right?

I actually use triple smoke tubes. Well technically I use one extendable smoke tube and two of what is called smoke boxes. The boxes are actually for other grills but I modified mine by drilling holes on the sides and bottom because in the Traeger they don’t get any airflow to keep them burning. In my tube, I add a 1/2 handful pellets, then wood chips then a wood chunk (I cut big wood chunks into small chunks that fit in my tube) the pellets….. in that order until full. I keep pellets on the very top because they light easily and contribute to getting the others burning as it burns itself from top to bottoms I basically do the smoke boxes the same. I light mine on the side shelf of my Blackstone griddle. I keep it covered in foil for this purpose. I stand the smoke tube upright and light the top. I use an electric fire starter that blows the heat to start them. A torch works well too. The trick is to get them smoldering until it bursts into a rolling flame. I then let them burn for about 5-10 minutes while I put the meat on my Traeger. I blow out the flames and close the doors on my smoke boxes and I use a set of tongs to put the smoke boxes inside the Traeger and I just carry my smoke tube by hand at the bottom (it’s cool) and place it in. I like a really strong smoke flavor so I use hickory and oak. Hopefully this helps you!

Thanks, Shedd. I've got a ProQ Cold Smoke Generator that I'll try for starters. Cheers.
