Auger motor

The purpose of the auger motor is to feed pellets into the grill to maintain grill temp.

In some older grills, the auger motor was either on or off, just like the HVAC unit in your home. Modern controllers have better capability for controlling the speed of the auger.

If the grill is below the setpoint temperature, the auger will feed pellets at a high rate until the temperature comes up to setpoint. Once the grill reaches setpoint, the auger motor will drop to a minimum feed rate that you might easily perceive as being off. Once the temperature drops below the setpoint, the auger speed should increase,

The fan is tied in with the auger. If the auger is running at high speed, the fan will also run at high speed. If the auger is running at low speed, the fan will make little or no noise.

It is possible for auger motors and fan motors to fail. If your grill temperature is holding close to setpoint, everything is working properly. If the temperature won't come up to setpoint or stays continually above setpoint by a significant margin, the you might need to do some troubleshooting with help from Traeger Customer Service.

Thanks for the input I have the pro 34 I have noticed it is leaving a big margin between Temps its worse at higher Temps which now it will not go to 450 maybe 410 at max and mainly stays at the 350 mark on high setting and the auger fan only spins occasionally every few seconds or so

With respect to the max temperature of the grill, how are you measuring. There will be temperature gradients across the grill. The thermometers that come with the grill are not always calibrated properly. Thus, many people get an independently calibrated thermometer. There are lots of options from cheap to expensive. Get one with good reviews and then check it in ice water and boiling water. Ice water is almost always accurate at 32 F. Boiling water is affected by the barometric pressure. Thus, if you are checking it in a hurricane or on top of the Rockies, the boiling point will be less than 212 F.

In cold, windy weather, you might have difficulty reaching max temp. You can get a welding blanket to cover the grill if you want to achieve hotter temperatures.

In the summer, many people have the opposite problem. They cannot hold temperatures below 200 F. Some even resort to using a fan to blow across the cooler to cool it down.

If you do not think your Traeger is operating as it should, you can always call Customer Service and tell them what you are experiencing. They might be able to give you guidance. If the think there is a problem with your grill, they may send you replacement parts such as a new controller.
