At start up after about 1 minute the auger stops.

At start up of the grill the auger starts to turn, fire box starts to smoke, the fan is running and then about a minute later everything shuts off except a humming sound. If I unplug the grill and start over it repeats what I mentioned above.

Have you tried letting the grill run for a while longer to see what happens?

If you turn off the power the controller loses track of what is happening.

I let it run for about 5 min and there are whimpers of smoke, never gains temperature and the auger/fan will run intermittently

Let it run until it fails to start just for giggles. It will shut itself down if it fails.
